When Larena wakes up, she is at the castle of Angus the Lion. She explains to the Laird what happened and why she has to leave posthaste. Angus releases Larena into the care of Darach and Logan. They will escort her back to Leathon Castle to save her father with the pardon.
During the journey, Darach and Larena become close. There is a disagreement between the brothers and Darach escorts Larena the rest of the way to Leathon Castle by himself. Their passions ignite and Darach declares his love for her. Will Larena return his love? What will this mean for her father's pardon? Can she have both her father and Darach?
I became tired of the uncertainty and confusion in Lana's mind and emotions. The angst was becoming too much. We know more about the hero than we do the heroine. The plot is well thought out. There is a mild cliffhanger because we don't know Logan's location. He just disappears and is not heard from again. There is a steamy love scene tastefully done.
>I am an independent reviewer. This book is the 4th in the Highlander series and ends in an HEA. Lorena pledged to marry a man in the English army in exchange for her father’s freedom. As she travels back to Scotland to deliver the royal decree, a band of Scottish rievers attack. Darach and his brother Logan find the aftermath of the battle and a badly injured Lorena. They take her back to their clan. Lorena is the daughter of the arch rival of Darach’s clan. Lorena hears things about her father that she cannot believe, such as her father killed Darach’s father. Darach is cold towards Lorena because he does not know or trust her.
>Logan and Darach are charged with seeing Lorena to her home safely, but of course the story would be boring if everything went according to plan. Lorena finds herself thinking about Darach too much. Logan is friendly to her, but harbors a secret hatred of her family.
>This book has a lot of twists and turns, scorned lovers and misunderstandings, but the ultimate HEA is worth the journey. Darach goes from unapproachable to beloved as Lorena discovers truths about her father and Logan shows his true colors. This book is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this story 5 stars.
Larena is first and foremost loyal to her father, who does not necessarily deserve it. Before meeting Darach, she has agreed to marry Gregory Chatham in return for sparing her father's life. Darach intimidates her at first but falls for her and ends up taking foolish risks for her. He talks about honor a lot but does not honor her commitment to Chatham.
A scene in Larena's bedroom after she's found Darach hiding there:
L. I must go! Gregory is waiting for me to have supper with me! I'm betrothed to him.
D. I'm besotted with you!
L & D: Let's have sex!
D.: You won't be a virgin for him if we have sex!
L.: I know! But I want to have sex with you!
L. I shouldn't have done that! My father will die if I don't marry Gregory! Go away!
I don't want to include a spoiler, but later something bad happens that Larena unfairly blames Darach for. Once again she chooses her father over Darach.
Summary: Lots of lust, little romance. I just felt sorry for Darach and thought he was less than intelligent. And there's a huge hole remaining at the end, which we learn will be filled by the next book in the series. Which I won't be reading.
