"Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress"
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? Cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, and instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise. I can’t think of a more apt description of how I felt reading this book and yes, I lived for these characters too. Stories that demand to be written--born from the author’s own marrow are by far my favorite reads. The emotion, turmoil, and confusion, in this book, screamed at me from its pages. I was a mess and in emotional turmoil myself. I couldn’t decide how I should feel. My common sense demanded one emotion, while my heart another. When right and wrong, good and bad, and love and lust are so entwined, it's hard to know how to unravel it all.
Tack and Juliet’s relationship was born in the most horrific of ways. One was a victim, the other the perpetrator, until the victim was no longer just a victim…..and became a perpetrator too. There was no easy way for these two. Actually, I’m not sure there should have even been a way at all, but love always seems to find one, if it’s strong enough.
This book, these characters, and the idea that started it all, redemption, forgiveness, and love, will be with for a long time to come. One can only hope that storm will blow in more stories for this author. In the meantime, I will be trolling her backlist.
Tack and Juliet are a fascinating couple. Each needs control but at the same time each of them needs to give control. They need to find that delicate balance. Once again the reader sees their scars and empathizes with their pain -- each of them needing to forgive and each of them needing forgiveness. The emotions are complex and the hotness factor intense. The conclusion of the Island Duet is just perfect.
L. B. Dunbar nailed it.
I can definitely say I have never read a series like this one. It had me questioning wether I’d have the strength to not only make it through a situation like Juliet and Tack went through, but to find the redemption they both wanted and needed.
It was not all hearts and roses. There were real, raw, intense emotions. It gave me the feels so many times. I was intrigued from the beginning, and could not put this book down.
The island knew, it was there always blowing in the breeze, all the answers... Just need to listen.
A beautiful ending to a beautiful story.
I highly recommend this "Duet" series to one and all!.
