Editorial Reviews
Louis Hayes is arguably the sound of modern jazz,
with an unmistakable musical vibe.
Here, he reforms a band he co-led with Freddie Hubbard
and Joe Henderson, with a new sound: the vibes/tenor
combination of Steve Nelson and Abraham Burton.
Hayes provided the rhythmic drive for some of the most
important and legendary recordings in jazz history
including classics by Horace Silver, Cannonball
Adderley, Oscar Peterson, Joe Henderson, Dexter
Gordon, and McCoy Tyner.
A perfect set of small group jazz including ballad
features for Nelson and Burton, a toe-tapping tribute
to Mulgrew Miller, and inspired playing all around!

Rather disappointed...I liked a couple of pieces, but not entire CD.

This is a great cd and a welcome relief, and a antidote to a lot of what passes for jazz these days.

A marvellous drummer and a terrific group

I have been a great admirer of Louis Hayes' work since I first heard him on a J J Johnson LP over half a century ago. It was therefore great to hear from this new album, recorded "live" at Smoke jazz club in NYC, that his skill and power are undiminished. He re-creates (but with different instrumentation and personnel) a quintet - The Jazz Communicators - that he first led back in 1967. This time, he's supported by tenorman Abraham Burton, Steve Nelson on vibes, pianist David Bryant and bassist Dezron Douglas who all play superbly on an excellent programme - a mix of standards (such as "Lush Life" and "Without a Song"), jazz standards and original numbers. It's a perfect antidote for anyone who may fear that jazz is dying!!
