A private airplane in trouble. A forced crash landing. A brush with death. We've all heard about vacations from hell. This one involves a dramatic flying adventure, international intrigue, government cover-ups you won't believe, and a tropical island paradise with a seedy secret. Throw into the mix a legendary drug lord, the professor who wasn't afraid to set him straight, massive smuggling, and a small Bahamian island that came complete with a primitive airstrip that once doubled as a Miami International Airport of sorts- transporting cocaine instead of passengers- and you've got a true story that has Hollywood screenwriters intrigued.
What happens when an ailing private aircraft limps into unfriendly skies? And lands on the threshold of death? Join Pilot/Filmmaker MayCay Beeler as she personally flies 2 crash survivors back to the island that nearly claimed their lives in this touching Documentary you won't soon forget. The island Norman's Cay was portrayed in the movie BLOW starring Johnny Depp.
2015 update from the producer:
When we know better, we do better.
At the time of producing this documentary, false and misleading information was being circulated about Carlos Lehder, the Colombian drug lord, featured in this story. Many years later, after extensive research and with new information, I have identified details in this documentary that were wrong. For instance, Lehder did NOT “murder anyone who got in his way,” and the island runway (where the airplane crashed in this true story) was not likely blocked “on purpose”.
The subject matter in this DVD highlights a true and very touching lost-and-found story, featuring Norman's Cay's colorful history. The updated research indicates the sensationalized stories about Lehder’s alleged violent nature are not true—the myth was more exciting than real life. When ordering this DVD, be aware of these inaccuracies. I have been asked to not pull the documentary (DVD) so viewers may see an untainted Norman’s Cay; however, I feel the product description should have an updated perspective.
You can learn more about Lehder in the award-winning true crime book I coauthored with his best friend and codefendant: Buccaneer, the Provocative Odyssey of Jack Reed—Adventurer, Drug Smuggler, and Pilot Extraordinaire by Jack Carlton Reed and MayCay Beeler available on Amazon.com.
