Oddyseus will return!

Michael Walker first made his mark on the world as the editor of the now legendary 'The Scorpion' magazine, which pioneered the translating and popularising of continental 'anti-capitalist right-wing' thinkers into English and the English speaking world. Many of these intellectuals, Alain de Benoist, Guillaume Faye, Julius Evola etc etc have recently been published into English by Arktos Books. His first play, which is also available from Amazon, was 'Hitler's Temptation' and is a thoughtful and atmospheric study of Hitler's relations with the various women who crossed his path. 'The Return of Odysseus' is Walker's second published play and on reading it the modern world drops away and we are transported back to the ancient world of Greece where the inhabitants of Ithaca suffer under the tyranny of the foreign suitors and their cohorts. Those loyal to the old ways, the old values and to the absent King are humiliated, ridiculed and despised and can only whisper ''Odysseus will return!'' All the while their land is pillaged, its wealth wasted, its traditions ignored or destroyed and its good Queen besieged. Hope against hope, those inhabitants who hold honour above petty material considerations, hold on and await the day when their liberation will come and justice will be satisfied. The tension mounts as the inevitable denouement approaches, and the ending does not disappoint. Here in 2015 we live in dark times and I can see the phrase ''Odysseus will return'' becoming the watchword for all those who realise what is happening and yearn for the day when we will free the world from the destroyers who currently enslave it.

Michael Walker tells this classic story in the form of a play which I read from the point of view of Telemachus, Odysseus's son who grows up fatherless unsure if his father is alive and will return to claim his throne or if he has died in a faraway war he did not choose to fight.

Telemachus's mother, unwilling to accept widowhood, weaves (then unwinds, at night) her husband Odysseus's funeral shroud as a way to keep the unworthy suitors and subversive pretenders to Odysseus's throne at bay all the while they gorge themselves at Odysseus's board, sacking his wine cellars and food stores.

Meanwhile the country is leaderless, the aristocrats and the privileged bicker and jostle for personal advantage whilst the state disintegrates.

Telemachus is tortured by his lack of courage and maturity making him little more than a pained spectator to this spiraling degeneracy.

A story for our times which poses thoughtful challenges both for the individual reader as well as for the society in which he lives.

I hope this play is taken up by a theatrical company soon and perhaps, in the meantime, performed as an audio drama on line ?

The earlier 3 reviews here have already expressed the content and context of this new play about Ithaca and the absent King Odysseus.
Every sort of man is represented and their speech reveals their character.
But the Queen Penelope at the center of action is as revered as The Goddess.
I imagined her as an alabaster statue, serene and still, wise and unveering.An archetype of Beauty.
Helen may have launched a thousand ships, but we know nothing of her character.
I was told long ago that women carry the customs, traditions and memory of the culture. This play evokes this fundamental idea for me, and I search for such an example in this day. I know of one not in the public eye, who does inspire and bring out the best in me.
Does our culture begin and end with the inherent integrity of the Woman ?
I think this story illustrates as much.
