Last month the Giants repeated as 2012 World Series Champs, sweeping the Detroit Tigers 4-0 to win their 2nd title in San Francisco. The S.F. Chronicle has again come out with their salute to the beloved Giants titled:"A Return to the Pinnacle:2012 World Series Champions". This book returns with a look at the ups & downs of the 2012 season, full-color photography fully as good as featured in the 2010 book & complete box scores of every playoff game. This book surpasses the earlier volume by including an article detailing the highlights of EVERY playoff game so one can always remember the dramatic come-from-behind wins over the Reds in the NLDS & the Cardinals in the NLCS ,as well as the glory of the Series victory over the Tigers.
If you love the baseball Giants, you can not miss this fantastic shout-out to the 2012 "Comeback Kings".
I bought my copy at Costco and when I got home to 'skiim' it I actually ended up reading the entire content. It was less than a month ago when we celebrated the parade but this book enables me to relive all the glorious moments of this incredible season.
The ONLY GRIPE I had with this book was: In the very first section under "Spring Training - Buster Posey Returns", nearly the last half of it was about the Oakland A's (A's opponent, where they played, named some players, the manager, etc.). Why????? Do Giants fans care??? The information adds nothing to the Giants season. I wish it can be removed from my copy.
EVEN AS I TURN TO MOSTLY DIGITAL MEDIA I STILL HIGHLY RECOMMEND OWNING THIS HARD COPY BOOK
It is not perfect. It'd be nice if it had even more info and data, or had info on every game and have tons more photos and detailed every player. But, it is only 128 pages and priced economically for everyone to have a good piece in a book. A 500 page book would cost a whole lot more and be less affordable for the majority of fans to purchase. The book is what it is... a very nice color photo book with detail and info of the 2012 season and the playoffs for the fan to have a very good reference. It is not a complete moment by moment account of everything. It's a very nice summary book with photos at a very nice price.
It's hard to find hardcover books in the ones you want to buy sometimes. Paperbacks seem to be the norm nowadays being cheaper to produce. I am glad this is a hardcover. The pages are good and glossy. I recommend the book for the content and it being a hardcover as well as the great price for what you get.
The middle triumph of the three World Series saw considerable drama for the Giants, as they overcame many issues. Would Buster Posey recover from his season-ending 2011 injury? Would the team recover from Melky Cabrera's late-season suspension for using steroids? Could the team survive Brian Wilson's season-ending Tommy John surgery?
The Giants responded to these burning issues in grand and historic form, scrapping and clawing their way back over and over again to win it all. In 2012, they accomplished two things the team had never done in its 128-year-history:
1. Matt Cain pitched the team's first Perfect Game, disposing of the Houston Astros.
2. In defeating the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS, the Giants won the seventh game of a post-season series.
If my grandfather was alive, he'd be proud. The 2012 World Series was the 100th anniversary of the 1912 World Series, which the Giants lost in eight games (one game was a tie, so they lost 4-3), on botched defense in the final inning of the final game. This World Series was payback time for my family.
When the World Championship trophy went on its tour, the Giants nodded to their New York history and brought the hardware home, along with Larry Baer, Brian Sabean, and Willie Mays, for breakfast at the Westin Hotel. I got to have breakfast with Willie. My father and grandfather were present in spirit.
The Chronicle has always had outstanding sportswriters, and they are in top form in this book, backed by fine photography. This book is a must-have for serious Giant fans.
