This is B-Movie greatness! Adventure, rubber suits, funny one-liners, it's all here. This is a review of the OOP Image release.

"The Return of Swamp Thing" is 10 times more entertaining than the first and here's a list of 10 reasons why:

10) Heather Locklear: Gentleman prefer blondes, nuff said.

9) The fight scenes are many, but varied which is cool.

8) The kids put in a great comedic performance.

7) Character development: each character truly has their own voice and a specific scene to remember them by, kudos to the screenwriters.

6) "Gun": The psychotic head of security has the best lines in the movie like "Turn him into guacamole" and "I got you now Mr. Potato-Head!"

5) The creatures: The evil monsters are classic sci-fi models that add the campy flare with a touch of realism.

4) The bath tub scene: After being blown up, Swamp Thing sneeks into Arcane's base via the plumbing. At least they showed one of Swamp Thing's powers, besides being able to punch people.

3) The war wounds scene: Security guards Gun and Poinsettia compare their various scars and tell where/when they got them. Very memorable.

2) Dr. Arcane: Every good movie needs a villain and Louis Jourdan puts in a great performance as he performs all his evil deeds with psychotic calmness and humor.

1) The Swamp Thing costume doesn't look like a melted plastic Green Army Man toy. That's right, there's actually some resemblance to the comic!

Overall this is a fun movie with plenty of action and comedy. It used to be shown in it's entirety on TV so it's fun for everyone.

I've read alot of negative reviews for this one, and none of the people writing these reviews really seem to grasp the concept of a Jim Wynorski film. Jim Wynorski makes b-movies, ONLY b-movies, and he makes them well. If you're unfamiliar with what a b-movie is, you should'n't be writing a review for this particular film, but I'll give you some background. Remember those old fifties drive-in films, you know, the kind they play on Mystery Science Theater 3000? Stereo-typical characters, guys in rubber suits playing cheesy monsters, and that special 80's touch up, huge breasts every couple of minutes...these are all elements of the b-movie. You're SUPPOSED to make fun of it. You're SUPPOSED to actually enjoy yourself watching a movie for once.
Return of Swamp Thing is an excellent b-movie, and one of Jim Wynorski's best. It's alot different from the original, but alot better, in my opinion. No disrespect to Wes Craven, but Swamp Thing isn't one of his better films. Not as bad as Scream 2, but it's not quite up to par with his usual films.
If you DID enjoy Return of Swamp Thing, I recommend "Not of This Earth" (1986), "Sorority House Massacre II: Nightie Nightmare", and "Hard To Die".

I don't know why,but I enjoy this movie much more than I enjoy Wes Craven's version (pt.1).Maybe because of the effects and the make-up which are cool for a low-budget movie, the characters -which are more interesting and more likeable and the black humor (take the case of the asthmatic monster(!) that fights with our hero).Besides, this movie features Heather Locklear and Sarah Douglas ,good monster fights and a beautiful swamp. To top it off ,I watched part 2 much before I watched part 1.This part 2 has a great beginning, which shows parts of the Swamp Thing's best comic books accompanied by the song "Born on the Bayou",which is a masterpiece. The story : A mad scientist (who has a deadly degenerative disease) does experiments on animals and people to find a cure for his health problem which can also give him immortality and special powers.Only the Swamp thing may offer the mad genius what he is looking for.

"Pardon me folks, I had to take a sip of Coke," slurps Wynorski on the DVD audio commentary, and his hilarious interruption here points out the dilemma that this is one comic book character that (apparently) can't be taken seriously in the cinema medium. Unfortunate indeed, since the Alec Holland character is one of the best horror/sf comic inventions around, and the early comics (and some aspects of the USA TV series that limped around stations in the U.S. in the early 90's) treated his creation more fairly (as a horror comics character). This film, though, is just plain silly. I like a lot of it, but it could have been much better, and, sadly, no one gets how to handle Swampy on the big screen. Hopefully a new film will finally do justice to this character.
The DVD is good, with some fun extras, and a great sound and picture transfer. Overall, it's a funny movie, but basically distorts a tragic character for further mixing in the swamp of B-movie stew. C+

this movie is a ton of fun. from the opening credits, where we see illustrations of swampy throughout his comic book career while born on the bayou by ccr cranks, it's clear that return of the swamp thing is out to enjoy itself. dick durock plays a nice swamp thing, and he really gets to talk a lot here. heather locklear is great as bubbly vegetarian abigail arcane, and an increasingly rickety louis jordan returns as arcane, and plays him with his usual panache. cheeze all around, this is a very different movie from the original tonally, but, like its' predecessor, return is mostly a romance. this movie does a nice job of incorporating elements from alan moore's run on the comic; not the hardcore horror stuff, mind you, but we get mention of the green (watch the wonderful psa's on the disc), and we get to see both swamp thing-grown hallucinogenic tubers, and his evolved regenerative abilities. swampy's suit is a vast improvement over the original and, while still clearly rubber, the vines and leaves hanging off of him--inspired by stephen bissette and john totlebon's illustrations more so than berni wrightson's--give him more texture and swampy-ness. beautiful location shots and a general vibe of fun, this swamp thing is definitely worth a return to the bayou.

this movie is SCREAMING for a shout factory release.
