This book is very well written, it flows very well and is very easy to understand. it's also very eye-opening. Real testimonials from real people who joined the jihadist groups and came back from them. It helps give a bit of understanding to how these groups operate, why people join them, and why some people are willing to carry out terrorist attacks on innocent civilians. What's scary is that some of the people who are coming back haven't abandoned their thoughts on radical Islam or terrorism in general. It points out political corruption, showing how some people who could change things chose not to for their own selfish motives. Even after prison, where this type of behavior breeds rapidly, some refuse to repent or turn back from their ways as a religious zealot who is willing to kill and fight for their ideologies. While so many books are written with the point of acceptance and not judging those who are or have been terrorists, this book gives a realistic view. They may be coming back, but while some are coming back and completely writing off their religious views and repenting for their actions, others are coming back as poisonous as ever. A must-read for everyone who lives in a country where these people are returning to.

This non-fiction work, translated from French, tells the first-person accounts of a number of people, mostly in their 20's, who left France to fight jihad in Syria, and who then returned, for a variety of reasons, to France. Through their reports, one learns a great deal about the conflict in Syria, the distinction between Al Qaeda and the Islamic Stats [ISIS or IS], the propaganda efforts in cyberspace that are made to induce people to join the fight, and the difficulties people face trying to extricate themselves from Syria and trying to integrate back in to French life. And, one gets a sense of the many reasons that impelled these people to want to leave France, not the least of which is the racial discrimination that people of color and of the Muslim faith encounter in many aspects of life there. I got a lot out of this book and would recommend it to anyone interested in these topics.

this book focuses on a bunch of malcontents and losers who joined the jihad. they left the safety and security of the west to take up arms against civilized people and nations. Now they want to return.

If nothing else this book underscores the need for countries to deal with these terrorists harshly and unsympathetically. these are not idealists lured by naivete and dreams of making the world a better place. They are the dregs of society, notwithstanding the economic situations, who happily engage in torture, brutality and slavery, exploitation of women and children, discrimination against other faiths and people. They are not noble warriors or zealots. They are just unhappy losers. Hopefully, France (and the rest of the world) will wise up before allowing these traitors to return. Infuriating and eye-opening this book is well worth the read.

It is a wide-ranging, thought-provoking read and the author does a good job of letting his subjects speak for themselves- which they often do with great skill and thought- making this all the more powerful a work.

It's not often we hear the stories behind the people, mostly young people, who have left their own countries to go and fight with one of the most feared groups in the world, ISIS. It's difficult, if not impossible, for most of us to understand why anyone would want to join a jihadist group bent on killing, often in the most brutal way imaginable. This book sets out to do just that.

The author is a well -respected journalist who has interviewed many of the young men and women who have returned, some disillusioned by their experiences, some intent on continuing their jihadist ideals in various parts of Europe. It makes for a difficult and unsettling read.

I had written an extensive review on this before my window deciding to shut down, therefore losing everything I'd written. The bad news is that it was actually quite well written. The good news is that I get to make a smart ironic comparison - the annoyance felt in losing that review and the anger is akin to the motivations in the book for those waging Jihad. Yes, the book covers these poor souls going off to kill and maim innocent people simply because their itty bitty lives didn't turn out the way they wanted to. The author interviews them over a number of years - before the first attacks and covering the desires to kill or be part of something - and after as some have left and regretted their actions, others have been killed, and others have escaped only to still want to destroy the West. It's well written, though the final section is an unnecessary extension and summary of everything that came before. It's certainly an interesting read, learning the inner workings of the organizations and some of the key players, but the overlaying message I gained from it all, which I could have told you before reading, is that they are all idiots.

If we truly want to understand the young people who have been heading off to wage jihad, this superb book is a very good starting place. The author has done an amazing job of interviewing a wide range of individuals who have been and come back, to discover more about them, their lives and experiences, and their feelings and views. It is in turn heartbreaking and frightening. This is real - not the garbage we get fed in the media. These are real people whose lives have been, and sometimes still are, the stuff of nightmares. Much of it through no fault of their own, but which has informed their choices. And none of us can say that, given the same circumstances, we would not have done the same. We are all human..
It is going to be a major challenge to find a way to treat each of these people as individuals and to aim to treat them as reasonably and fairly as we can as they come back home, and not just make blanket assumptions which will only compound the damage - to them and to the society we all live in.
