The adventures of the formerly human cohorts are entertaining; I'd recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs and has ever thought about what it'd be like to actually become one. We get to see the newest member of the gang adjust to becoming four-legged while not leaving his former self behind (the hardest part for me to adjust to wasn't the Westie who can sew or the Chihuahua who can hot wire a car, but the hound dog who eats Ho Ho's).
All in all, it's a very entertaining story and I am looking forward to their next set of adventures (a series would be even better)!
The dogs characterizations were spot-on. I could hear and see these guys in my head the whole time I was reading. Have I said it was funny? Ah, the pictures in my head! If you are a dog lover, this is absolutely a book you should read. The characters of the dogs are perfect for their breeds, as well as for the personalities of the people they used to be. Back before they had an "oops" moment that sent them to the "Heavenly Returns Department" upstairs. Oh, well, even angels make the occasional mistake!
If you have a great sense of humour, a good attitude and the ability to "make yourself comfortable" with dogs who sew costumes, work on car engines and generally behave like I can imagine my own dogs behaving, don't miss this one. I am eagerly watching for the next!
The concept for The Returns borders on the absurd and yet it has just enough "human interest and semblance of truth" to allow the reader to focus on the delightful mix of humor, suspense, and just a touch of romance as the plot unfolds. I found myself often amused, never bored, and eagerly reading the book to its end. When I reached the end, I felt a sense of disappointment because I so thoroughly enjoyed the story. Fortunately, it appears that the author has written and published a sequel to this book.
The writing is solid, the plot is well designed, and the sense of humor is wonderfully carried throughout. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to immerse themselves in the delight of pure escapism.
