Essential reading for our time - genius

Another work of genius from the great Tito Perdue, one of the foremost novelists, and satirists, of our age. In this work, his usual protagonist, the 'wild old wicked man' Leland Pefley, hater of all things modern, schools his young Reuben in the ways of truth and righteousness. Reuben is like a shambling mountain man who turns into a Nietszchean superman under Pefley's tutelage. He then goes out into the collapsing, contemptible, sometimes hilariously decadent world around him, to conquer it, and to make it new. Sure it's a fantasy novel. But it chimes beautifully with the way we live now, it tells the truths that today's tottering ruling class tries to suppress, and confirms Perdue as a prophetic voice in the wilderness on a par with, and possibly beyond, Orwell or Huxley.

A reactionary mythology in the shadow of society's disintegration

In the near future, civilization is slowly but surely collapsing. Perdue depicts a time when the television programs always contain noble minorities and malicious white men. A future, or present, where the cities are bland, "a desert without trees, filled with consultants and public relations experts". Money and "value base" are what matters, beauty and quality of life have been eliminated. Perdue accurately describes the United States with the words "The United States was no longer a country with an economy but had become an economy with a rudimentary country of sleepers a bit behind it".

Highly recommended for the resistance.

An irreverent, subversive hoot!

Lee Pefley, the author's alter ego, has one last trick up his sleeve. He's facing eternity after a lifetime of living by his own stern code of honoring the best of Western civilization and refusing to buckle under to the barbarians. Lee takes in a diamond in the rough named Reuben and whips him into shape physically and mentally. Armed with Pefley's hates and reading list, young Reuben goes out to "conquer the world" - or at least "the occidental share of it."

It's a depraved world Reuben takes on, and by the end of his life, has pretty much managed to reclaim much of Western civilization, punish those who sought to wreck it (with special attention to their Quislings), and reshape the economy and culture to support a livable, more humane, more noble country. Perdue has a wicked sense of humor and a stinging style of writing that had me thinking and chuckling as I read it. Better than "Confederacy of Dunces," with a much more interesting protagonist. Highly recommended!
