I loved the main characters and there were enough unexpected events that I didn't want to put it down to go to work.
The author has an excellent knowledge of the major historical events of the period and wrote about them in an intelligent yet interesting way.
There were so many characters that made the story interesting, but it was a little difficult to keep them all straight at times.
The book had a nice resolution, yet there were still a few loose ends which made me happy because I want to read more about these people in future books.
I always look forward to new books by Jude Knight. She is one of my favorite authors.
I made the mistake of reading "A Baron for Becky" before all of Jude Knight's other books. Now that I have read the first two novels of "The Golden Redepennings" series, I have a better understanding. I must reread the story now.
Now to discuss "Mist" and "Shadow." I first noticed this magnificent couple in Rede and Anne's book. They stuck with me. I couldn't wait to read their story. I am so glad that I did.
In which we meet two accomplished and connected enquiry agents working both for The Crown and wealthy individuals to investigate suspected criminal activities including blackmail. The story takes us through the machinations of multiple suspects, interconnected motives, murder, mayhem, rape, bigamy, suspected sodomy and misdirection.
Oh my goodness on to the next one. I'm so sad that there is not a huge backlog of novels and that I will be catching up really soon.
This is not your typical ton novel. Intrigue and suspense are buzzwords for this book. It will keep you guessing. There are more villains in this piece than heroes.
If mystery and suspense are your cup of tea, please read this book. You will not be disappointed!
David and Prue (or Shadow and Mist, the code names by which they are also known) harbor secrets from each other, despite being friends, lovers, and co-workers. Although the H and h of the book, they are only part of a very complex cast of characters that continually reappear in Knight's books.
I have no idea how the author manages to keep everyone straight, but they all seem to slide effortlessly into the story, making it among the most captivating books I have read in a long time.
Ms. Knight is such a thorough author. Her description of characters, both primary and secondary, lets you form a picture of them in your mind as you read the words. It is the same with her settings and scenery. While reading this book, I felt like the movie was playing in my mind. I was casting the characters as each one was introduced.
This book has it all-scandalous romance, intrigue, mystery, love lost, love found, flawed characters, spies-both female and male, interesting plots and subplots. I actually had a difficult time putting it down as I really wanted to know how it would all end for Mist and Shadow. As I read the last words, I took a deep breath and thought maybe I should start over again. In my haste to know how it all would
end, I am quite certain I missed some of the delightful descriptions. Time for a re-read!
I received an ARC of this book. The choice to read and review it was all mine.
Her gift is to see but remain unseen, unless she wants you to see her, then she can be a vivacious as the next lady,
but with a level of wit and friendliness that sets her apart. She is the kind of character you want to be friends. Intelligent without
being a bluestocking, loyal and honorable.
Jude Knight writes in a way that tells you everything you need to know about a person to imagine them in your head, but not too
much. Just the right amount of description of scene and character. When you think you will be able to put the book down to get your housework done, you are drawn back in with a well placed twist in the story.
Seriously, I could not put this down, reading at work when I should have been doing actual work! LOL Her writing is wonderful and flows
perfectly through the story. You will want to set aside time to read because nothing is getting done!
David Warfield is also an honorable and likeable man. He is in the same line of "Business" as Prue. They are both secret collectors. They each look into matters for other people and discover what the truth is in whatever way they can. They are investigators. And they are both very good at what they do.
These two have met before on other jobs. And they share a history that might make things awkward.
They both have secrets of their own that they are not willing to put out there as of yet.
They are both investigating a ring of spies and blackmailers. Both working for different people but they end up sharing most of the intelligence they gather.
Which is the way David likes it. You see he has a very tender spot for Prue, and she him, but neither of them want to get hurt.
Both are under the assumption that the other does not want anything beyond a working relationship. It will do, for now.
Our mystery surrounds a courtesan and her harem of gentlemen callers. Someone is blackmailing and someone is trading secrets.
But are they the same people or person? Prue and David work to discover the truth that lies beneath the subterfuge
that is the ton and it's many foibles. There are so many people involved that I couldn't figure it out right away, which I loved!
I do love a good intrigue and I found it here!
I can't wait for the next book, Concealed in Shadow.
