As personal as the story is, this is still a horror novel, and Zach still brings the carnage when the time is right. The best scenes take place in doors, some really great claustrophobic moments while the characters explore abandoned houses and a particularly terrifying warehouse.
I really wasn't sure what to expect going into this book. With the knowledge we received from prior books about the Empties there is still plenty mythos to explore if Zach decides to. I'm not sure if I'd call it the best book in the series, I still might like the 5th book a bit more, but it ends the series perfectly, keeping the world open for more but giving the characters the ending they deserve.
