Cain was trained by Dr. Ronan to help protect those in need of the services of safety and security, protection by their private agency and, if necessary, to eliminate the evil. Ronan knows from personal experience that this could be Cain's salvation as his tragic and traumatic childhood left terrible physical and emotional scars. Cain could not stand to be touched. He acknowledges that he has nothing of value; no people, no things other than his truck.
There is something suspicious about Ethan, a missing employee at Ronan's hospital and he sends Cain to assess the situation. Cain discovers much more than expected including two people in desperate need of his protection. Themes of domestic violence, drugs and violence are included in a sensitive story of finding a sense of self, a sense of worth, a family and even love despite the most terrible trauma. Despite the journey, through hell it seems at times, there is an entirely satisfying and loving ending.
This author is in my top five and as fast as she will write I will read.
I look forward to the next book & look forward to seeing more of Vincent too.
I would happily recommend this book (the entire series).
And the sneak peak on Phoenix story...
Keep doing what you love doing and we'll keep supporting you.
In this book we read about Ethan and Cain and I don't know whose story is more heartbreaking, Ethan's or Cain's. It is easy to see why each man is the way they are and the fact that they are able to overcome things and except each other is beautiful to read about.
Ethan is on the run from an incredibly abusive ex and Cain is the protector that Ronin the signs to investigate the disappearance of a fellow employee of the hospital. We quickly learned that Ethan is actually a doctor and not just an employee in the hospital. He is incredibly talented and if he is able to live his life as he should show many will benefit. So Ronin sends Cain after Ethan and Ethan quickly find out and realizes that there is so much more going on than he ever expected.
We learned about Cain and his story is truly heartbreaking. It was incredibly sad what he went through at such a young age and the fact that...I will just leave it at that because I don't want to give anything away.
I definitely recommend any and everything that Slone has written. I have devoured everything that she has ever written and I cannot express enough just how moving her writing is.
I read where a few reviewers thought the love was too instant. We all have our own feelings & thoughts which I respect..
For me I didn't feel that way.
Through my life I have seen people fall in instant love/lust. Some of these relationships survive some don't.
In this story I didn't feel it was farfetched for these two. With their past they were like two lost souls.
I don't want to give spoilers. I'll just say Ethan was not expecting to survive the week out..
He had given up as there was nowhere else for him to run or hide from the extreme brutality of his ex.
In Cain he found a love he & Cain had not expected. I loved Cain even with his own baggage he stayed strong for Ethan.
My thoughts of Ethan at this stage he believed he was going to die.
He wanted to die with his last memories of Cain's love strength gentleness replacing the pain & hate inflicted on him by his ex..
The timing of their love didn't come into it for me I thought it fit the storyline perfectly.
Sloane Kennedy is an amazing story teller. All her series are page turners. Once started impossible to put down.
The storyline was amazing and both characters were well developed.
Ethan's story was so heartbreaking and so well written.
I loved this book and have already read it twice.
I recommend this book if you've read any of Sloane's books. And if you haven't I recommend that you start and you won't be disappointed.
