This is one hell of a book, I was transfixed to the story from the start to the very end. Our lead character Jenna, goes on a rather life changing journey, lets not forget the fight between heaven & hell for her soul. I especially loved the prequel, where you got to understand the back story that's hidden from Jenna until she turns 17. Then she is kidnapped, rescued, learns about her heritage, lied to, suffers a heart wrenching lose... you would think she has no love left to give?? I'm not going to ruin this book for you, so I'll stop there.
I will say that the journey for Jenna, made her character very likeable, you felt her lose, pain, anguise, anger & love along with her. The book was thoughtfully put together, making it easy to understand what was going on, without giving away all the major details before they occured. I especially loved the paranormal content within the book & the exploration of teenagers constant struggle with right & wrong. I'm hoping there is more to this series & will keep an eye out for more from Pamela Daniell in the future.
There are commas where there shouldn't be, and missing where they should be. There are so many grammatical, spelling, and punctuation mistakes that it's embarrassing when you realize that a person is credited with being the "editor." There are also descriptions that defy themselves: "...a small red cottage that was bordered by a dense forest on all sides....Jenna climbed out of the car, stretched and looked at the old two-story house..." So, is it a cottage or a two story house? They are not one and the same. There are silly descriptions too; the house smells of "dirty mildew." Is there a "clean mildew" smell I never knew about?
Even the dedication is terrible: "I dedicate this book in memory of my grade school teacher Mrs. Connolly who's words 'Keep on writing' I still hear today." It's too bad Mrs. Connolly never wrote out those words for Ms. Daniell, or she'd have made sure that it would read, "whose words."
I'll admit to being appalled that people are lauding this as being a great YA reader. I challenge self-published authors to show their works to people outside of their usual reading circles to get unbiased commentary PRIOR to publishing.
