Make no mistake about it, this model requires a lot of detail work to make it into a first-rate display piece, but the potential is there, and the results are well worth the effort. It's a big model, with a wingspan of 11 3/4 inches and a legnth of 9; the large size means that there are numerous opportunities for adding details. Keep in mind that the original kit released by Revell back in 1959--that's right, it's older than many people who will read this review; Revell put a lot of effort into the original molds, and they've held up well over the years, albeit having been refurbished a couple of times, first in 1981 and then in the late 1990s. The date of origin of the kit means that in some ways it lacks the precision of current generation models, so if you're expecting a 1/28 scale version of an Edouard kit, you're going to be disappointed. This is not a project for a model-builder wannabe who whines whenever his or her kit isn't flawlessly engineered or molded. There are ejector-pin marks on many of the pieces that will require sanding or filling and sanding, and the fit on some of the fiddly bits (like the engine) can leave a lot to be desired, as sometimes locator pins are misaligned. I recommend dry-fitting every piece and part before cementing them together, to make sure you get the best possible fit you can, or else to spot places where additional work needs done first.

So why, you must be asking by now, did I give this kit five stars? Lots of reasons. The Hispano-Suiza V8 engine is a little gem, with some fine wire and tubing, and the right paints, you can produce a beautiful little motor that is a model in and of itself. The cockpit, while acceptable as is, practically begs for superdetailing, a challenge no real modeler can resist.

Actually, quite surprised at the size (1:28) of this model and the high quality of its parts. Looking forward to the build. I have about 25 years experience at building aircraft models and am beefing up my WWI pieces with this SPAD XIII.

I have but one complaint... As far as other 1:28 scale styrene aircraft kits go, thanks to the wisdom of Daniel Allen Butlers' review and advice posted here, I've found the Sopwith Camel (currently under construction), Fokker DRI, the D VII (currently unavailable), and, well, that's it. 'Guess we just have to finish the rest of the Great War flyers from balsa.
I'm really enjoying the Sopwith build and this Spad looks equally fun out of the box. Come to think of it, balsa planes in this scale will make great flying models... Hmmm...
