It starts out with Lani, a girl consumed by grief and blaming herself for the untimely death of her brother. Ms. Lynch's grasp on the self-defeating emotions that comes with grieving for a loved one is strong: your heart will break for Lani from the moment you meet her.
Ferrin (love that name, by the way) is somewhere between dead and alive, an enigmatic yet totally transparent (no pun intended) character. He is a shrink to spirits, in a way, and he is drawn to Lani because of her brother's death.
This is a heartfelt story with some creepy moments, but mostly it is very touching. It is written with simplicity, emotion, and a lot of heart.
I was drawn in to Lani from the beginning, I've lost someone very close to me and I could feel her pain, it was very nearly palpable. But you see her transform from a ghost of herself, broken, into something not fixed but, less broken, able to move on.
Ferrin is just as broken as Lani but in a different way, he is mysterious and guarded. These two need each other. There sarcasm is wonderfully witty.
I received this book from the author for an honest review.
