Gritty novel from an author who knows intimately the world she writes about * Express * A powerful novel that pulls no punches... About the Author
Martina Cole is the acknowledged queen of crime drama with over twenty novels to her name, of which over a dozen have been No.1 bestsellers. Several of Martina's novels have been adapted for the screen, including The Take and The Runaway which were shown on Sky 1 to remarkable reviews. In addition, Two Women and The Graft have been adapted for the stage; both were highly acclaimed when performed at the Theatre Royal Stratford East, which also staged Dangerous Lady in 2012, celebrating twenty years since Martina's debut novel was published. Martina Cole is a phenomenon. She continues to smash sales records with each of her books, which have sold thirteen million copies. In 2011 Martina surpassed the GBP50 million sales mark since records began and was the first British female novelist for adult audiences to achieve this - and she has spent more weeks in the No. 1 slot on the original fiction bestseller list than any other adult novelist. Her hard-hitting, uncompromising and haunting writing is in a genre all its own - no one writes like Martina.

The sample sounded good, the daughter of a crime boss gets kidnapped, etc, etc, but the entire book was taken up with the daughter shackled in the cellar, while her father had all his goons hunting for her. There seemed to be no real substance to the story- she was in the cellar, Dad was hunting for her. There were no real moments of suspense or drama, there was no gory detail, which made it all a bit "blah".
One other thing which I found really annoying, was the way Martina wrote the dialogue, especially when it was the main man speaking. It was written in an almost robotic way, which I didn't find terribly realistic.
For example " When I find the perpetrator of this heinous crime, I will personally launch him into outer space.I am a magnanimous man as you know, but I will not turn a blind eye to a crime of this magnitude".
I may have not quoted verbatim, but this was how M had him speaking, albeit with quite a few 4 letter words in there. I just couldn't imagine a big crime boss speaking this way, but having never heard one in real life, maybe they do. But I didn't like it.
So, not a book that I would recommend- it was priced fairly high, and I felt quite ripped off. I will think twice before purchasing another of her books.
I could picture the characters as big goons and almost cartoon like. It was amusing if nothing else.
This book does not even come close to any of her other material. I preordered it. Next time I will wait and sample it first.
Very repetitive in dialogue. I was like "yes I know this, you have told me a million times"! Lol
I do not recommend as a serious novel, but If you want a chuckle and have a good imagination and like comic books, then go for it. I cannot believe Martina cole wrote this piece of rubbish!
To be honest it was a lazy effort it had the typical plot for one of her novels a fresh faced handsome face.
Who at the very beginning of the book is a young wannabe and turns out to be the biggest face in Europe.
Of course as with all of ms Coles novels he has a beautiful girl on his arm and a group of contacts that he trusts with his life.
He has a daughter that is wild who miracously comes to realise the error of her ways she's a druggie who doesn't care about her son.
The only redeeming feature of this book is the fact that when the story eventually gets going and it takes about 80 chapters for it to do so the ways in which the kidnapper slash killer is found is actually quite inventive, and his motive is quite good and he's a baddie that you despise.
Don't be so lazy the next time Martina your a good storyteller try something new please
The last 4 books she has written have different storylines but the storylines and characters are very similar.
Faceless was the best book she's written in my opinion and all her books after that struggle to meet that standard!
I've been a fan for a long time but her writing gets progressively worse. I would most probably buy her next book not out of enthusiasm but merely just out of curiosity and to add on to my collection as I have every book.
