A good read about a young man coming of age , finding his purpose as a soldier and finding love and friendship. Set during the Roman rule of Britain. The Roman Legion of the 9th of Hispaniola suffers a great loss , but later succeed in a battle against all odds. The historic battle is detailed with great excitement. Both an educational and entertaining book. Highly recommended.

This story is a chapter in the history of Rome and its conquest/colonization of Britain. The backdrop is the story/legend of Boudicca, the British queen, who rallied the various British tribes to revolt against the Roman occupation. The are some real Romans and British plus fictional heroes and heroines. We follow the life of a young Roman, who wants to be nothing more than a fighting legionary. We go through basic training with him, meet his buddies, the tough drill master, the beautiful girl and learn a bunch of Latin words. We march with him to Britain, even though part of the time is on a boat sailing between Gaul and Brittania. There are some subplots that evoke a bit of interest. Such as the use of assassins. The history is always compelling, but the fiction is predictable. We know early on that the hero will be the hero and end up with girl.
It is a quick read. The sentences have a lot of Latin words that become distracting. There is a nice glossary of terms, but it missed a few words. I found myself guessing at the meanings of some the words describing uniform parts. The dialogs flow nicely but simply. Many of them begin like this ... "he, he, he," I believe indicating a giggle. These giggles sometimes are out of place coming from the studly speaker. Regardless, it is fun and the history is enlightening.

I've ridden this book with some skepticism due to I not know the writer, but I wanted to taste a bit of the old Rome in its authenticity.
I'am passionate about books and films about ancient Rome but I have to admit that almost everyone has some gaps side of Roman life real, or there is too much fancy names and locations without taking into account the reality of those days.
In the book of Roggero I found a real representation of life in Rome 2000 years ago, allows you to look at a cross-section of the Roman Empire without much real and fantastic creations.
I recommend it to anyone who wants to understand and enter into the reality of those times gone ...

Mr. Roggero has done a splended job with great attention to detail and a nice, easy flow to this story of the Ninth Legion. I read it in just a few sittings as I never quite wanted to stop reading, always a sign of a great book !!

If you like Roman history written in a great story I'm certain you'll love this well written book.

This is a great book, a real gem with a unique writing style that will draw you into the novel and keep you turning the pages. It is clear that it is well researched both in terms of historical events and when it comes to the smallest details of Roman warfare. Of course there is plenty of action and violence to keep the core readership happy, but it is also a very sympathetic portrayal of Hadrianus and the other historical characters that fill these pages. Again, it is a well written, well researched, and with a good plot. There are a lot of novels set in the Roman period this one stands out a mile. At the quality end of historical fiction.

I've fallen on the web page of this book and whatched the MSB tecnology video. Also if the Roman history is not my favourite subject I've tried to read this novel listening to its music... Very engaging! I suggest it to everybody! ...now I also look forward for reading the sequel... and to listen the next music soundtrack.

Written in the present tense with a lot of conversations that didn't make any sense. I have read several books about the Roman army and it's training but this author makes it sound too easy. The book just doesn't work for the time period it is supposed to represent.
