Review
Reversing the Trauma of War is exceptional. It is not only a mustread but a must-use both by those suffering with PTSD and by practitioners who work with those who suffer from the ravages of war. I have found it useful both personally and in my practice of treating those who have experienced many forms of trauma. Because of the complex presentation of PTSD, this handbook should be considered a "tool box." It provides personal vignettes
and multiple guides to manage the multitude of symptoms associated with PTSD. It has been an honor to review this work for I see it as great resource for all who suffer from and all who treat PTSD.

What a gem of a book! Reversing the Trauma of War is a gift of hope for veterans and their families whose lives are compromised by trauma and PTSD. While the clear, step-by-step mental imagery exercises are very user-friendly, don't let the simplicity fool you: the practices are grounded in the most recent cutting-edge research to effectively rewire the brain and regulate the nervous system. In my work as a psychotherapist, this book is a valued resource in my practice toolbox, and for my clients.

Brilliant! The book is amazingly well written, communicates effectively at the appropriate level, is well organized, and includes terrific case studies, great dialogue, and an array of practical exercises that boggle the mind in their variety, cleverness, and detail. I recommend it to everyone -- laypersons, undergraduates, mental health professionals, and your next-door neighbor.

What Kahaney and Epstein have achieved is unique. Weaving together an understanding of combat PTSD, personal stories, and an easily accessible guide to self-care and resolution, they offer healing through the simple and powerful tool of mental imagery. A remarkably practical book, the authors break down common themes of combat PTSD, offer simple explanations and provide mental imagery "recipes" that one can easily understand and use
immediately.

Both Epstein and Kahaney are professional practitioners who are steeped in the methods of mental imagery and bring those skills to bear on their subject. They focus in succeeding chapters on the major consequences of traumatic experience: anxiety and fear, depression, addiction, guilt, pain, grief, nightmares, etc,, each time with specific imagery exercises that target those symptoms.
As a psychotherapist myself, I see this book as a great contribution to the field of trauma work, and a useful resource for therapists as well as clients. It’s value is not only for veterans of war, but of any humans who have endured the small and large traumas of life on earth.
I've been waiting for this book for a long time! I've purchased the Kindle edition. It's well-written, and well-organized and has powerful and simple exercises accompanied by well-explained and clear insights.
As a mental imagery practitioner, I applied one of the techniques in this book (Replacing the bad with the good) to a client of mine who came to the session with issues of guilt and anxiety. She experienced an immediate shift towards the better and is now moving forward in her life with inner strength and confidence.
Although it's always best to be assisted by someone trained in Mental Imagery, I encourage you to try these exercises yourselves, the Life Plan, the Stopping Exercise, the Guest House just to name a few. There is also a chapter on how to create your own mental imagery exercises.
Above all, this book is carrying the torch of the essential work of healing through mental imagery as taught by Dr. Gerald Esptein. I cherish this book along with all the others written by Dr. Gerald Epstein.
I could go on and on about how impressed I am with the author's compassionate expressions of hope and their thoughtful and straight-forward instructions for taking action. Visualizing a hoped-for outcome is, for me, an important step in reaching my goals, and this book gives me techniques to give me more focus.
