After nearly twelve years of silence Ruby is back, with a vengeance, a sneer, and the hooks. This time the gorgeous Lesley Rankine is all by her lonesome it seems, with a little help from her brother reportedly(I would say MW is not necessarily missed by moi). I would like to give her big props for leaving the scene to raise her son, if there is a good reason that is it. That said I am overjoyed to hear she hasn't lost a thing. Her voice still has that range I loved back when, smoky snarl(Last Life) to calming coo(Lush) and all the in between (Fireweed). I would say this new EP is like a microcosm of what you loved about Ruby back in the day with a new mature stance. So far "Last Life" is my favorite, it presents to me as a elegy to a side of your self that you carry with you but may not be the now, though you are all the better for it. I am not going to expound anymore song by song as the music speaks for itself. If you loved her then you will love her now, and how exciting it is to think of all who will fall in love with her for the first time. I am honored (and a little shocked/saddened) that I am the first to write a review for this on here. I hope to see many more raves that it deserves, spread the word people. I just happened to turn a new friend onto the old stuff a few days ago and decided to look them up again, as I have many times before with the hope of anything new and shazam! Made my year. The remixes are stellar by the way,the clappy "Fireweed" being my fave. Oh by the way there is another new song "Waiting For Light" that has a Bjork coolness to it. This track can be had for free at [...] along with the fresh video(I also recommend you check out the new vids on the Tube("Last Life" is great, featuring inebriated sock puppets). I just want to finish by thanking Lesley, you have renewed my faith, screw genres, you have your own, missed it.
