Product Description

(3-CD set) The three albums that Gil Scott-Heron recorded for Bob Thiele's Flying Dutchman label are among the most important in black music history. They showed a multi-talented artist coming to full fruition with his first efforts on wax. The Revolution Begins contains every piece of music he released for the label from 1970-1971. In recent years Gil has become a lauded as one of the all-time greats. This music is the reason why.

It includes classic performances, including both the spoken word and band versions of The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, Home Is Where The Hatred Is, Lady Day and John Coltrane, Pieces Of A Man, Whitey On The Moon and Free Will.

Taken from the original master tapes, the sound quality on this release trumps all previous reissues. The bonus material includes an alternate version of Gil's third album Free Will and the previously unreissued Artificialness, which Gil recorded with Bernard Purdie on his Stand By Me album. The in-depth sleeve notes contain previously unpublished interview material from both Gil and his songwriting partner Brian Jackson. The booklet also includes previously unpublished photographs of Gil taken by Raymond Ross at the sessions for Free Will. Packaged in a digipak and slipcase with a separate booklet containing a note by project supervisor Dean Rudland.

Review

By the time Heron had finished reciting The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, he had unwittingly changed his life. He would no longer be seen as a writer, but a singer, voice of musical black radicalism, doomed junkie... and the man who invented rap. This three-disc reissue of everything Heron and his pianist partner Brian Jackson recorded on Thiele's Flying Dutchman label would probably not exist if Heron hadn't bid farewell to that world in May 2011. But for listeners who only know Heron through his final 2010 album I'm New Here, The Revolution Begins... will be a revelation. Not just because it features some great music and poetry, much of which still sounds acutely relevant. But because the man who slowly killed himself with drugs, spent two lengthy periods in prison, and never quite came to terms with his chaotic childhood, prodigious intellect and hatred of white power, is as present and defined and agonized here, in his early twenties, as he is on I'm New Here. Listen to The Vulture, or Who'll Pay Reparations On My Soul?, or Home Is Where The Hatred Is and you can only come to the chilling conclusion that Gil Scott-Heron knew exactly where he was headed. --Uncut.com

Poet, singer, polemicist, the late Gil Scott-Heron wrote his ghetto 'manifesto' a little over 40 years ago, and it's still resonating. (4 STARS) --Mojo

The Revolution Begins... offers every last-known remnant of Gil's Flying Dutchman recordings, making it one of the most historic collections in the evolution of hip-hop. These are far more than building blocks, however; here's a place where jazz, soul, politics and a rare intuitive passion coalesced in one man, who ultimately proved as humanly fallible as his subjects. (5 STARS) --Record Collector

The best advise this reviewer could give anyone who happens upon this listing is to buy the CDs, listen to and savor the music. Not just because they are timeless (they are), not because they are songs with a message (they have), not just because they are made Gil Scott Heron a living legend (they did). What makes this set so unique is that (at least for the West Coast) these recordings were so hard to find, and here they are all in one box set.

Flying Dutchman was a relatively small, independent label, and did not have a great distribution. They certainly could not compete with the giant labels, like Warners or Capital. Consequently, back in the day, if you were lucky enough to hear GSH on the radio -- which happened, primarily in the larger metropolitan areas or in the college towns -- his records were practically IMPOSSIBLE to find. The fact that the label charged distributors several times, changed ownership, and encountered other economic pitfalls did not help matters.

There were reissues but the quality of the recordings were spotty. In these recordings, the remastering is done off the original master tapes, and the sound quality is crystal clear and faithful to the analogue.

In his later music GSH was more and more lyrical and emphasized his jazz roots. In these recordings he is raw, sparse, his music is poetry set to percussion, perhaps with piano; there is no lyricism, but the spoken word against rhythmic riffs. The only other group which made similar recordings were the Last Poets, who also recorded on Flying Dutchman and were even more difficult to find. It is the DNA of hip hop and rap which followed him ten years later.

He is sorely missed. These recordings is how he should be remembered. He has never sounded better.

In this 3 CD box you can find three Lp that changes de black poetry and music in America. "Pieces of a Man","small talk at 125th and Lenox" and "Free Will" are now classics. Three albums produce for Bob Thiele for Flying Deutschman, after produced a big number of albums for Coltrane. Two of this are in the first CD titled "Songs" The second one titled "Poetry,Jazz and Blues" are recordings for the first "Small talk at 125th and Lenox" and another material. Probably is the first reference to the actual rap. Voice, congas, flute. piano, and nothing more. The third CD are alternate takes from "Free Will". The box also contain a excellent information booklet.
Gil Scott Heron was a fantastic poet and a incredible musician. Here you have the best of both sides. Probably coudl be the best re-edition of the year. IMPRESCINDIBLE¡

I remember hearing Gil Scott Heron on WBLS in New York back in the early 70's. It was his seminal take on discontent and revolution... "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" that first caught my ears. More melodic than "The Last Poets" but just as real, just as urgent... just as important. My brother... always a few years ahead of me did me one of the many great favors he did for me in my youth.. he went and bought "Free Will". I played this album over and over and over again till the grooves disappeared. I saw Gil in the late 90's. Tired, worn, ravaged by a decades long bout with drugs... but still a man with something urgent to say. This compilation is simply a godsend. This is not the root... but it is the trunk of the tree. Influential beyond any mere words I could ever say. "Did you Hear What They Said" has haunted me all my life... From the concrete edifice of The 40 Projects in Jamaica Queens... through tours overseas in and out of uniform and finally here as I slide into the last phase of my life... the man his words haunt me. God rest your soul Mr. Heron job well done...

I own almost every Gil Scot Heron recording & this is very close to the compilation would have put together myself of the Flying Dutchman recordings. I think the compilation of the spoken word on one disc and songs on the others is brilliant. Hopefully if you are new to Gil, and you buy this, it will whet your appetite for more....this is just the tip of the iceberg.

music that 40 years ago changed the direction of music today. The most underrated of musical genius' considering his impact on musicians. All of the classics together in one box. Essentially listening for today....it's all still relevant and just as edgy politically.

This is worth every penny. A perfect release. Every Gil song from the first 3 albums and more. The Flying Dutchman era is Gil's most inspired. These are very important albums. Amongst the very best of the era.

Gil was one of america's greates critics, in a time when blackmen were quiet because they just wanted to belong. The revolution will not be televised was, and is to this day, a wake up call. A contain reminder then like it is now. Outside of some of the events that he poignantly mentions in the tune. The black revolution is an outline for change. Calling upon black revolution to affect change in the hearts and minds of black people to unit the masses as one, it will not be televized means that the revolution will be of the mind.
