From social theorist and psychotherapist Rabbi Michael Lerner comes a strategy for a new socialism built on love, kindness, and compassion for one another. Revolutionary Love proposes a method to replace what Lerner terms the "capitalist globalization of selfishness" with a globalization of generosity, prophetic empathy, and environmental sanity.

Lerner challenges liberal and progressive forces to move beyond often weak-kneed and visionless politics to build instead a movement that can reverse the environmental destructiveness and social injustice caused by the relentless pursuit of economic growth and profits. Revisiting the hidden injuries of class, Lerner shows that much of the suffering in our society—including most of its addictions and the growing embrace of right-wing nationalism and reactionary versions of fundamentalism—is driven by frustrated needs for community, love, respect, and connection to a higher purpose in life. Yet these needs are too often missing from liberal discourse. No matter that progressive programs are smartly constructed—they cannot be achieved unless they speak to the heart and address the pain so many people experience.

Liberals and progressives need coherent alternatives to capitalism, but previous visions of socialism do not address the yearning for anything beyond material benefits. Inspired by Herbert Marcuse, Erich Fromm, and Carol Gilligan, Revolutionary Love offers a strategy to create the "Caring Society." Lerner details how a civilization infused with love could put an end to global poverty, homelessness, and hunger, while democratizing the economy, shifting to a twenty-eight-hour work week, and saving the life-support system of Earth. He asks that we develop the courage to stop listening to those who tell us that fundamental social transformation is "unrealistic."

    Love this book.

There is a lot in this book that I don’t agree with. There are a lot of policy proposals that are—even according to the author—utopian to say the least. But he has the right intention. There’s no way that we can move forward playing the current political game that we have. Like the prophets in the Scriptures, he tries to imagine a world filled with love and justice. He calls this post socialism. Even if you don’t agree with everything that he says, the book is still worth picking up.

A moving and passionate call to build a society and world based on love and justice. It may seem far fetched and unattainable but if we really believe in our liberal ideals it’s worth the effort to try!

“All over the world, psychotherapists are beginning to notice a pervasive depression in many patients. People feel hopeless about the possibility of saving our planet and are more inclined to abandon any involvement in societal processes other than extracting as much pleasure for themselves as possible before our planet becomes unlivable.” (Revolutionary Love, p. 74)

We are well aware of the scope of the problems facing humanity in these challenging times, and the toll they are taking on our bodies and souls. But reading this book from start to finish leaves one with hope that we can address our problems and create a world of love and balance.

The first section of the book reflects Michael Lerner's penetrating analysis, based on a lifetime of intensive interdisciplinary research as a social scientist, psychotherapist, political activist, and religious leader, of the interconnected network of self-defeating strategies and abuses of power that have led to the current evils of society and the damage done to the natural environment.

But Lerner never just stops his presentation simply by leaving us with the recognition that, however bad we think things are, in fact they are even worse than we imagined. Rather, like the ancient Hebrew prophets he inspires us with a vision of a world of love and balance, based in the recognition that every human being, regardless of our ills and our foibles, ultimately is looking for love, for people who care, and for a sense of purpose in life. And the method to achieve these goals for the society as a whole is through "prophetic empathy," a heartfelt caring and effort to understand the experience even of our adversaries, accompanied by a vision for how people might genuinely get their needs met.

A paradoxical theme for a "political manifesto" is that to inspire people to join in efforts to realize their dreams is to not succumb to admonitions to be "realistic." As we know from Martin Luther King Jr., society can be changed when one affirms that "I have a dream." Indeed, Lerner quips that King's famous oration would have been largely ignored by history if his tagline were "I have a...complaint."

To appreciate the final section of the book, it is important for the reader to embrace the task not to be limited by what is "realistic." The program Lerner delineates is ambitious beyond anything we have ever heard from our political leaders. It touches every aspect of our communal life. Yet no matter how sweeping the changes are, they are always based in love and caring - not only the content, but also the process. Lerner recognizes that force is not the way to build a loving society.

I can't recommend this book strongly enough for anyone who cares about the world we live in and is hungry for the vision and the hope to create the world to which we aspire.

"Revolutionary Love" is a manifesto for our apocalyptic times that anyone invested in the fate of the planet should read. I wish the Democratic candidates running for president in 2020 would read it, because Lerner's ideas about how to reach and mobilize people are so brilliant, well-researched, and accessible that I think progressives could not only win the election, but stoke a powerful revolutionary movement should they take these ideas to heart. The pathologies that dominate American politics seem so intractable, but the culture that is arising to challenge it is rife with possibility and trans-generational wisdom.

The question is, how to harness it in a way that will allow us to effectively and humanely navigate the climate disruption that is already upon us? How can we take care of each other rather than atomize into fearful isolation? How can we call in with love rather than call each other out with contempt, so that we can undo the ethos of "me-firstism," as Lerner calls it, that the religion of Capitalism has instilled in our national—and increasingly global—psyche.

I've been a careful reader and observer of our society for the past two decades, and I've never read book that is at once so easy to understand, so deep in its psychological analysis, and that has the potential to actually change the world. I fear that this book is ahead of our times, that people will reject its ideas as too utopian or radical, and that decades from now people will wonder, "Why the hell didn't we listen to this prophet when we still had a chance to save the planet?" But prophets are rarely taken seriously in their own time. May we heed to call to wake UP!
