“Reyn” comes from “I Love Trouble” creators Kel Symons and Nate Stockman. Reyn, the main protagonist, is a Warden of Fate who protects the realm from various demons and monsters. When Fate slips into darkness, Reyn teams up with a sorceress named Seph to answer the call of The Mistress of Light.
Reyn’s story was fast and erratic which was odd considering that there seems to be a rich history and backstory to the world of Fate and the Wardens. I understand that most first issues of comics are there to capture the reader and bring them into the world, but I would have loved to learn more about the history of Fate.
Meanwhile, the creatures and the characters seem pretty stereotypical at this point. I think most fantasy readers will have come across a giant evil spider in their readings, so it was a little annoying to see this monster take center stage in “Reyn.”
It is hard coming up with a fresh idea in the fantasy genre. At this point everyone is simply borrowing Tolkien’s ideas. But what separates great fantasy writers from the average are their ability to add something new to Tolkien’s established concepts. Symons has a good foothold on his world, but I would have liked to see something new added to the genre.
By all means you should attempt to read this if you are interested in a fantasy comic, but understand that there really isn't anything new in it.
