Aristotle's Rhetoric is an ancient Greek treatise on the art of persuasion, dating from the 4th century BC. In English, its title varies: typically it is titled the Rhetoric, the Art of Rhetoric, or a Treatise on Rhetoric. Like the other works of Aristotle that have survived from antiquity, the Rhetoric seems not to have been intended for publication, being instead a collection of his students' notes in response to his lectures. The treatise shows the development of Aristotle's thought through two different periods while he was in Athens, and illustrates Aristotle's expansion of the study of rhetoric beyond Plato's early criticism of it in the Gorgias (ca. 386 BC) as immoral, dangerous, and unworthy of serious study. Plato's final dialogue on rhetoric, the Phaedrus (ca.370 BC), offered a more moderate view of rhetoric, acknowledging its value in the hands of a true philosopher (the "midwife of the soul") for "winning the soul through discourse." This dialogue offered Aristotle, first a student and then a teacher at Plato's Academy, a more positive starting point for the development of rhetoric as an art worthy of systematic, scientific study.

About the Author

Aristotle (384 BC-322 BC) was a Greek philosopher, a student of Plato and teacher of Alexander the Great. His writings cover many subjects, including physics, metaphysics, poetry, theater, music, logic, rhetoric, politics, government, ethics, biology, and zoology. Together with Plato and Socrates (Plato's teacher), Aristotle is one of the most important founding figures in Western philosophy. Aristotle's writings were the first to create a comprehensive system of Western philosophy, encompassing morality and aesthetics, logic and science, politics and metaphysics. Aristotle's views on the physical sciences profoundly shaped medieval scholarship, and their influence extended well into the Renaissance, although they were ultimately replaced by Newtonian physics. In the zoological sciences, some of his observations were confirmed to be accurate only in the 19th century. His works contain the earliest known formal study of logic, which was incorporated in the late 19th century into modern formal logic. In metaphysics, Aristotelianism had a profound influence on philosophical and theological thinking in the Islamic and Jewish traditions in the Middle Ages, and it continues to influence Christian theology, especially Eastern Orthodox theology, and the scholastic tradition of the Catholic Church. His ethics, though always influential, gained renewed interest with the modern advent of virtue ethics. All aspects of Aristotle's philosophy continue to be the object of active academic study today. Though Aristotle wrote many elegant treatises and dialogues (Cicero described his literary style as "a river of gold"), it is thought that the majority of his writings are now lost and only about one-third of the original works have survived

Aristotle (/ˈærɪˌstɒtəl/; Greek: Ἀριστοτέλης [aristotélɛːs], Aristotélēs; 384–322 BC) was a Greek philosopher and scientist born in the city of Stagira, Chalkidice, on the northern periphery of Classical Greece. His father, Nicomachus, died when Aristotle was a child, whereafter Proxenus of Atarneus became his guardian. At eighteen, he joined Plato's Academy in Athens and remained there until the age of thirty-seven (c. 347 BC). His writings cover many subjects – including physics, biology, zoology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, aesthetics, poetry, theater, music, rhetoric, linguistics, politics and government – and constitute the first comprehensive system of Western philosophy. Shortly after Plato died, Aristotle left Athens and, at the request of Philip of Macedon, tutored Alexander the Great starting from 343 BC. According to the Encyclopædia Britannica, "Aristotle was the first genuine scientist in history ... [and] every scientist is in his debt."

Teaching Alexander the Great gave Aristotle many opportunities and an abundance of supplies. He established a library in the Lyceum which aided in the production of many of his hundreds of books. The fact that Aristotle was a pupil of Plato contributed to his former views of Platonism, but, following Plato's death, Aristotle immersed himself in empirical studies and shifted from Platonism to empiricism. He believed all peoples' concepts and all of their knowledge was ultimately based on perception. Aristotle's views on natural sciences represent the groundwork underlying many of his works.

Aristotle's views on physical science profoundly shaped medieval scholarship. Their influence extended into the Renaissance and were not replaced systematically until the Enlightenment and theories such as classical mechanics. Some of Aristotle's zoological observations, such as on the hectocotyl (reproductive) arm of the octopus, were not confirmed or refuted until the 19th century. His works contain the earliest known formal study of logic, which was incorporated in the late 19th century into modern formal logic.

In metaphysics, Aristotelianism profoundly influenced Judeo-Islamic philosophical and theological thought during the Middle Ages and continues to influence Christian theology, especially the scholastic tradition of the Catholic Church. Aristotle was well known among medieval Muslim intellectuals and revered as "The First Teacher" (Arabic: المعلم الأول‎).

His ethics, though always influential, gained renewed interest with the modern advent of virtue ethics. All aspects of Aristotle's philosophy continue to be the object of active academic study today. Though Aristotle wrote many elegant treatises and dialogues – Cicero described his literary style as "a river of gold" – it is thought that only around a third of his original output has survived.

Unless you are religious and have a favorite tome for that sort of thing, this is the most important book you will ever read. Such a spectacular study of humanity, so accurate despite so many centuries and cultures between. The wisdom of so many holy books without the need for spectacle, guilt, hyperbole, or esoteric didacticism. It cuts to the chase and beautifully illustrates practically everything that's gone wrong with modern politics, everywhere. It's nice, in a way, to see that people haven't changed a whit since Aristotle's time, but it's depressing to see that people haven't changed a whit since Aristotle's time either. It's not an easy read; it's hard to grapple with the ideas; and you have to want to improve yourself to bother with it. But worth it, if for no other reason this book will show you how to spot the B.S. pretty much everyone is dishing out in this hyper spun world of ours.

Thank you!.

This book has some issues with the way it was printed:

*There's no name on the spine
*The image on the cover is stretched
*There are issues with spacing and kerning in the text
*A lot of section titles are on the bottom of one page with the section itself on the next page
*The font and layout seem cramped, a dubious choice for dense writing like Aristotle's
*There are no page numbers
*There is no preface or appendix

However, this book was $6 new. You get what you pay for and I feel like I cannot complain too much about poor quality when I spent the same amount you'd expect to pay for a beaten up old book with half a dozen stickers on it. If I were to wager a guess, I would say that the publisher had x amount of a certain type of paper left over from some other project, wanted to boost their numbers by the end of the quarter, so they threw this on the press after an extremely short editing period to make a few extra bucks.

Loeb translations are always well printed and good. I would caution readers of all the reviews of this book, because many of them sound as if they are comments on other editions, which is typical of Amazon reviews of books that are printed in multiple editions by various translators. I think every reviewer should specifically name the edition of the book reviewed.

A classic in ancient Greek thought. Aristotle introduced the qualification of 'necessary' and 'possible' premises. And his book on Rhetoric deals on this teaching as well as many others. Shows where he differs from classic Platonian thought and where he agrees. An important work, as all of his works most undoubtedly are as they influenced the Western world for over a thousand years.

Aristotle's Rhetoric is a wonderful read, and one which is still highly relevant today. It should be noted that, despite the blurbs on the product page, the Kindle edition is not the Kennedy translation. The Kennedy translation is really worth the extra money for the print edition if you have a serious interest in the subject, but the Kindle edition is a decent (and cheap!) introduction to the text, although it lacks annotations, and any sort of introductions.

The language used in Rhetoric is quite complex, so although the book is quite thin it took me a long time to go through it. I liked the explanation of the difference between dialectic and rhetoric, which got me interested in the book in the first place.

The looks and feel of the book is def not something you pay for. But it's a book - you buy it to read it, so it fits the purpose (and the translation is good). All in all not my best Amazon purchase though
