I also want to add this: I read this book twice -- once as an author asked to give an endorsement, and then again as a weary pilgrim who NEEDED these words. I can't say enough good things about Rhythms of Rest.
You see, I'd heard of Shelly Miller and her wonderful community of Sabbath Society but the name frightened me a little. As someone who airily waved my hand to dismiss such an Old Testament concept, I never took the time to investigate the true meaning behind this community. But God knew my heart and He was more than aware of words I needed to hear.
In the Spring of this year it was clear to me that He laid the idea of Sabbath rest on my heart. Not a giving up or a twiddling of thumbs, but honest to goodness rest in Him. When I began the journey I searched out several resources to help me in my studies. I was undone as I read Shelly's blog posts and how enriched the lives of her and her community were as they rediscovered this gift. Ladies, the words between the pages of this book far surpass any of that. They will loosen the bondage of busy in your life and give you a breath of fresh air that you likely never knew you needed.
If I could give this book six stars I would. And truthfully, it's rare that I would say that about any book. Shelly's words are nothing short of a gift. If you only buy one book this year, trust in this message and grab this one. I think all of us could stand to find a new rhythm...of rest.
I was introduced to "The Sabbath Society" and Shelley Miller several years ago by a simple Google search. The Lord had been drawing my heart into the contemplative life; and I myself desired to radiate peace instead of the constant harried feeling that was my constant companion. I knew God had instituted Sabbath as the final crown to His creative passion, and so the word was my search.
From the beginning, Shelley's words brought grace, peace, and a time of satisfied fullness of spirit.
But it wasn't till I became a member of the launch team and read the book that I really applied fully the lessons Shelley was teaching us - and I can say I have learned much and God is bigger in my heart and more reflected in my life than before I put Sabbath into practice!?
If you have thought Sabbath was:
an Old Testament construct only,
a legal requirement to the Jewish people,
a nice idea that would never happen for you,
something that only happens on Sunday,
something that only happens on Saturday,
just one more thing laced with rules and restrictions,
another Biblical concept you could fail at,
a reason to avoid learning about rest...
Then get ready to learn what Sabbath really is...
A reminder to pause and let our hearts be focused on what is important...
A release from perfectionism by focusing on the only One who IS perfect...
A reminder that we belong because we are already accepted...
A pause for prayerful listening, even for a few minutes,
that brings everything that is important back into focus...
An interchange with our Creator—it’s a choice,
an elective He hopes you’ll pick first from the list that is keeping you busy...
and so much more!
Consider getting a paperback copy to sit with, mark up, devour and digest. It promises to be a very close friend to your Bible for your quiet times!
Page by page, chapter by chapter, you will be invited to savor the very best portion of your life with God and His rich desire to relate to you personally. There is no condemnation, nothing to conform to - just a reissuing of God's invitation to come to Him and find rest for your souls...
You know what I mean—those Brits seem to be the only wise people on the planet who can actually take a holiday for more than one week. Every year.
Gross generalization perhaps. But not many of us know people who, if they could afford it of course, would actually TAKE a three week vacation. Not many.
We Americans pride ourselves on our over-busy, 24/7 lives, wall to-wall days and non-stop weekends. Multi-tasking has become a religion. Why, we scoff at anyone who might appear to be just sitting and daydreaming.‘Do something! Act engaged! Busy yourself!’ are the unspoken mantras of our day.
Shelly Miller is such a firm believer in slowing down and reclaiming the days that she wrote an entire book about it.Her belief in the power of Sabbathing—taking at least one day a week to stop from one’s own effortsand rest—is the impetus for “Rhythms of Rest.”
Shelly’s message of taking a full-stop in our weeks is backed up by psychologists, theologians and physicians --we need to get off the hamster wheel that we call our lives and REST. Rest with family, rest with a book, go for a walk, dare ourselves to do nothing but look around and take it all in.
But how does one begin? Is it really possible to put into practice? Shelly answers all these questions and many more in Rhythms of Rest—a book you’ll want to slow down and savor. Maybe on your couch. Maybe on your front porch. Maybe on your vacation.
And you don’t have to move to England to do it; a simple book purchase is all it takes.
