You know what I mean—those Brits seem to be the only wise people on the planet who can actually take a holiday for more than one week. Every year.
Gross generalization perhaps. But not many of us know people who, if they could afford it of course, would actually TAKE a three week vacation. Not many.
We Americans pride ourselves on our over-busy, 24/7 lives, wall to-wall days and non-stop weekends. Multi-tasking has become a religion. Why, we scoff at anyone who might appear to be just sitting and daydreaming.‘Do something! Act engaged! Busy yourself!’ are the unspoken mantras of our day.
Shelly Miller is such a firm believer in slowing down and reclaiming the days that she wrote an entire book about it.Her belief in the power of Sabbathing—taking at least one day a week to stop from one’s own effortsand rest—is the impetus for “Rhythms of Rest.”
Shelly’s message of taking a full-stop in our weeks is backed up by psychologists, theologians and physicians --we need to get off the hamster wheel that we call our lives and REST. Rest with family, rest with a book, go for a walk, dare ourselves to do nothing but look around and take it all in.
But how does one begin? Is it really possible to put into practice? Shelly answers all these questions and many more in Rhythms of Rest—a book you’ll want to slow down and savor. Maybe on your couch. Maybe on your front porch. Maybe on your vacation.
And you don’t have to move to England to do it; a simple book purchase is all it takes.
Rest is a difficult subject but an even more difficult reality. It is also a necessity of we expect to live alive in this world. I think Shelly has done a compelling job of both the subject and the reality.
I struggle with the reality of Rest so much. Shelly is open and honest about her own struggle with rest and she encourages me to keep walking toward the goal. I know Rest is a command and I know Rest is a love-letter from our Gracious Heavenly Father. So why do I struggle? Why do we all fight such a battle to enter such a beautiful embrace from God? I think Shelly has cracked the case, discovered the "whys" as well as the"how's" for us. As I read, I found my desire for Sabbath growing and, believe me, I was hungry to begin.
I highly recommend this book. Like I said at the beginning, the book itself is restful, drawing us into more than just a how-to list...drawing us into a deeper desire to true Sabbath and connect with our Loving Heavenly Father in quiet communion.
Thank you, Shelly, for taking us by the hand and inviting us along on your journey of learning to live in Sabbath Rest.
Shelly speaks to the heart of Sabbath, not as something we are to slavishly serve, but something which will serve us by providing both a much needed rest from the rigors of our fast-paced lives and an opportunity to grow in our faith by trusting God with out time.
Rhythms of Rest doesn’t seek to provide any formulaic answers. Rather, the author’s use of story—from her life, from her reader’s lives, and from the Bible—beckons us on a journey toward uncovering rhythms of rest and discovering the practical and spiritual benefits along the way. It is perhaps this invitation which makes this book so encouraging to the soul and endearing to the heart.
