Disturbing Content with Slave Children!

Based on all the positive reviews here as well as recommendations from several homeschool curriculum websites, I ordered multiple copies of this book for a class. What a surprise to read chapter VIII, "The Slave City," set in Timbuktu! In this chapter Halliburton describes how he casually buys two African slave children to work for him during his stay there on his world travels, how they are naked and he teaches them to bathe, and how he then SELLS THEM BACK INTO SLAVERY before continuing merrily on his journey. In our classroom, we are not okay with a wealthy white dude (or anybody else) casually buying slaves in Africa for a lark. After reading more about the author, I learned that there may be reason for thinking that Halliburton invented the whole account. Rather than making things better, however, I am then doubly concerned both about the author's poor judgement in handling the subject of slavery and also about his reliability given his irresponsible mixing of fact and fiction in a book that is supposedly a guide to geography. This author is not the kind of role model I want to set before students, especially the elementary-grade students to whom the book is addressed.
