Richard John Neuhaus (1936-2009) was a Catholic priest and a conservative intellectual. He edited and wrote for the conservative journal First Things, wrote a number of books, and advised George W. Bush on ways to appeal to conservative religious voters. During the 1984 Presidential election, as candidates debated the influence of Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority, Neuhaus’ bestselling book The Naked Public Square offered a balanced perspective on religion and public life, one that affirmed religion’s role while criticizing aspects of the religious right’s approach.

Yet, Neuhaus was not always a Catholic, and he was not always a conservative. During the 1960’s and the 1970’s, he was a prominent Lutheran clergyman who was active in the Civil Rights and anti-Vietnam War movements. Neuhaus had also ministered in the inner-city. Richard John Neuhaus: A Life in the Public Square, by Randy Boyagoda, tells the story of this figure.

The book goes into Neuhaus’ public life through a number of events: the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, divisions within conservatism, the Clinton impeachment, the abuse scandals within the Catholic Church, 9/11, the Iraq War, and the candidacy of Barack Obama. But the book is also about Neuhaus as a person: his struggles with school, his long love for debate and pontificating, and his relationship with his family.

Overall, the book effectively describes the conversions that Neuhaus made in his life. It presents Neuhaus’ rationales for his conservatism: his belief that the U.S.

As a Protestant convert to Catholicism this excellent biography had particular resonance. Clearly written and highly readable it was inspirational as well as informative. There is an good blend of history, anecdote and teaching about why Father Neuhaus believed and acted as he did.
As a Boomer so much of the turbulence of our times both in society and in various churches provided a backdrop to my own life during these events.
The superior quality of leadership demonstrated by Father Neuhaus regardless of the controversy or stakes was sobering in these times of political correctness.
His friendship and partnership with Charles Colson was just one such example.
An inspiring read on many levels.

This is an excellent biography. I wondered, before reading it, how such a controversial figure would be treated, especially by an author who is previously known as a novelist. But I was not disappointed. Boyagoda uses his novelistic skills to great effect, drawing wonderful scenes of all the phases of the life of Neuhaus. Although quoting generously from his many writings, the biography never has the sense of a dull scholarly project; rather, Richard John Neuhaus appears on the page with all his gifts and flaws, his penchant for self-promotion as well as his deeply lived religious vocation.

The book is engaging on many levels and to readers of different political and religious loyalties. Neuhaus's shift from left to right politically, his conversion from Lutheranism to Rome, his engagement with key figures in politics, journalism, and religion, provide a unique vantage point for understanding the dynamics of American political and religious culture. The author has made excellent use of the archives of Neuhaus's papers, as well as extensive interviews with family, friends, co-workers, and critics. Even though I have been reading Neuhaus for almost thirty years, I gained many fresh insights on the man and his work from this biography.

A new biography, Richard John Neuhaus: A Life in the Public Square by Randy Boyagoda, does quadruple duty. It provides a well-researched and documented critical look at the life and work of Neuhaus, in the context of US history, including sociological trends, from the 1960’s through the early 2000’s, societal pressures on and changes in the role of the Church, or religion in general, in public life, and the continuing struggle over unresolved Reformation issues among and within Catholic and Protestant bodies. It is a great read.

Neuhaus (1936-2009) was raised the son of a Missouri Synod Lutheran pastor in Canada, received the Master of Divinity from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, and served as pastor of Brooklyn’s low income, mostly minority, St. John the Evangelist Lutheran Church in the 1960’s. He preached and spoke in favor of social justice and civil rights and against the Vietnam War, and became well known as a liberal activist. As his liberal friends and associates moved leftward and more secular in the 1970’s, Neuhaus moved right and became a strong spokesman for conservative Judeo-Christian ethics and positions on public issues.

One of a diminishing minority of Lutherans who saw Lutheranism as a reform movement within the universal Catholic Church, Neuhaus gave up on Lutheran reform, was received into the Catholic Church in September, 1990, and was ordained a Catholic Priest a year later. Included in the biography are his eloquent explanations of the reasons for this change and for his shift to conservatism.

A prolific and powerful writer, Neuhaus is perhaps best known for The Naked Public Square: Religion and Democracy in America, published in the mid 1980’s, and comprising a direct challenge to the emerging Political Correctness movement.
