About the author

Richard Scarry is one of the world's best-loved children's authors EVER! Generations of children all over the world have grown up spending hours poring over his books filled with all the colorful details of their daily lives. No other illustrator has shown such a lively interest in the words and concepts of early childhood. For himself, whenever he was asked how old he was, Scarry would always put up one hand and laugh, saying, "five!"
In his extraordinary career, Richard Scarry illustrated over 150 books, many of which have never been out of print. His books have sold over 100 million copies around the world, and are currently published in over twenty languages. Richard Scarry, Jr., also an illustrator, carries on his father's work today under the name of Huck Scarry. He was posthumously awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Society of Illustrators in 2012.

But that’s kind of the point, isn’t it?
Nursery rhymes are fun. They are our history. They are life. They deliver lessons and insight to the very young, the very old, and everyone in between. Yet they are so much more for early readers. They introduce children to the syntax of the world; of language, learning, and of life.
This book is well executed. The art is simple. It’s colorful, engaging fun that adds jocularity to the tales found in more serious rhymes, and depth to the silliest of these rhymes.
This book is comprehensive. There are many, many nursery rhymes in this book. The usual suspects are present, and many more that you’ve probably never heard of. They’re here.
I can’t recommend this book enough, and I recommend purchasing it alongside Aesop’s Fables. Both of which should be read aloud slowly and with great expression.
If I have one complaint it’s that the pages are paper instead of plastic. In my wildest fantastic and perfect world Richard Scarry’s books would be printed on an indestructible page that our youngest can pull at and chew on when the bigger kids abandon their books for the rocks and trees outside. Alas, paper is what we get, so I recommend keeping this book inside on rainy days, and perhaps out of reach of the inquisitive toddler. Or else you may end up purchasing it more than once.
Although I had several Mother Goose books in my kindergarten room, this is the book I usually used when I introduced a Mother Goose rhyme to my students. Each nursery rhyme has at least one page and sometimes two. The illustrations are charming.
I have bought many copies to give to babies over the years.
It's important to read nursery rhymes to your children. They love hearing them, and the rhymes are part of our literary heritage. Sometimes political cartoons or ads allude to these beloved rhymes.
Years ago I was taking a children's literature course, and the teacher was showing us Mother Goose books that had won critical acclaim. I asked, "But what about 'Richard Scarry's Best Mother Goose Ever'?" She answered, "That's the one children love."
