I bought this book for each of my children when they were little. My son who is 42 years old now handled his copy so much that I had to put heavy green library tape on the spine.
Although I had several Mother Goose books in my kindergarten room, this is the book I usually used when I introduced a Mother Goose rhyme to my students. Each nursery rhyme has at least one page and sometimes two. The illustrations are charming.
I have bought many copies to give to babies over the years.
It's important to read nursery rhymes to your children. They love hearing them, and the rhymes are part of our literary heritage. Sometimes political cartoons or ads allude to these beloved rhymes.
Years ago I was taking a children's literature course, and the teacher was showing us Mother Goose books that had won critical acclaim. I asked, "But what about 'Richard Scarry's Best Mother Goose Ever'?" She answered, "That's the one children love."

Amazon.com Review
Richard Scarry's bright and humorous animal characters have been charming children for decades. Always inventive in the world of animal fashion, Scarry shows the cow jumping over the moon in pearls and a pink dress, and the little dog who "laughed to see such sport" sports a sailor suit. You won't hear "I can't see the pictures!" with this book; its large size makes it a good choice for group story hour. This collection of 50 Mother Goose rhymes is especially appropriate for toddlers; most of the two-page spreads contain only one illustrated rhyme. (Many children younger than three can focus better on one simple verse than on many rhymes on each page.) Richard Scarry's Best Mother Goose Ever has stood the test of time for more than 25 years and is still a hit with young readers. (Ages 1 to 4)
From the Back Cover

The reasons I love to give this book as a baby shower gift and as a birthday gift to little ones are:
*The illustrations are phenomenal--they are fun, colorful, large and imaginative!
*The sing-song nursery rhymes are short and easy to memorize, making story time fun! They can "read" along with you!
*Little ones get less distracted with this book. It's a large book with very colorful illustrations and short sentences so you're still turning the pages as quickly as they want you to!
As a little one I memorized these rhymes and "read" along with my mom by the age of 2 or 3. It is the most memorable book I grew up reading and an absolute classic. I encourage you to try it. Richard Scarry may no longer be with us but I hope this book will remain for may years to come.

As a long-time fan of Richard Scarry’s works it’s difficult for me to leave an unbiased review. I grew up on his books. Even in my Pre-K years I was so enthralled by the stories and the art that I would sit for hours poring through the books, and as a result I could read well before first grade. So it’s no surprise that when introduced to phonics, and the massive lexicon that phonics opens up, I was already sold and ready to go.
But that’s kind of the point, isn’t it?
Nursery rhymes are fun. They are our history. They are life. They deliver lessons and insight to the very young, the very old, and everyone in between. Yet they are so much more for early readers. They introduce children to the syntax of the world; of language, learning, and of life.
This book is well executed. The art is simple. It’s colorful, engaging fun that adds jocularity to the tales found in more serious rhymes, and depth to the silliest of these rhymes.
This book is comprehensive. There are many, many nursery rhymes in this book. The usual suspects are present, and many more that you’ve probably never heard of. They’re here.
I can’t recommend this book enough, and I recommend purchasing it alongside Aesop’s Fables. Both of which should be read aloud slowly and with great expression.
If I have one complaint it’s that the pages are paper instead of plastic. In my wildest fantastic and perfect world Richard Scarry’s books would be printed on an indestructible page that our youngest can pull at and chew on when the bigger kids abandon their books for the rocks and trees outside. Alas, paper is what we get, so I recommend keeping this book inside on rainy days, and perhaps out of reach of the inquisitive toddler. Or else you may end up purchasing it more than once.

This is the third time purchasing this book. One for my children when they were little, one for my granddaughter, and one for a disabled man I work with who is on the level of a 5 year old. The pictures are delightful! There’s something soothing about listening to nursery rhymes! Rhyming is a prelude to reading, as many words are similar-cat, sat, mat, pat. It takes a little longer to arrive, but I like to pay shipping and order these books third party used from a Goodwill around the country. It helps everyone out. This one was in like new condition!

The pictures, large print and traditional nursery rhymes make this the perfect gift for new babies! This was given to me when my child was born and she loved sitting on my lap even as a baby and looking at the pictures and listening to the nursery rhymes. I highly recommend it!

I bought this book for my son when he was born in 1973! It was well loved and read frequently. It is my favorite gift for all newborns in my family--nieces/nephews, grandchildren, and now great-grandchildren--and extended family and friends. I have also purchased other Richard Scarry books as birthday and holiday gifts. You really cannot go wrong giving any child a book--especially a Richard Scarry book. I have a great-great nephew arriving in mid-February, and this book is for him.

My father used to read this book to me when I was a kid. It got to the point, even before my siblings and I could read, that we had them all memorized and would "read" them back to my dad. I have very fond memories of this book. My God son is finally old enough to sit still and appreciate this book--he's 4. I took it over to his house a few weeks ago and he loved it. The illustrations are great--bright and engaging-- and these are classic nursery rhymes that are fun to read.
After seeing the book, I'm thinking about ordering one for myself. I love it so much.

An essential book for babies & toddlers
Reviewed in Canada on June 14, 2019Verified Purchase
Both my kids adore this book! I had it as a baby so I was glad to share it with them. We’ve read it so much over the years we’ve gone through several copies (book ripping stage, taped back together, and still used until it was falling apart). The rhymes are so much fun and the cadence is so comforting to little ones. The pictures are a lot of fun too, although not my favourite style of drawing. I accidentally ordered two copies, but I’m keeping the second since we may end up needing it anyway. I highly recommend a copy for babies/toddlers.
