I used Rick's guide to Italy on a recent trip, and it was fantastic! It is the perfect blend of general information and specific facts, such as extremely useful information on the best bus routes in Rome. This type of advice allows you to travel like a local, rather than a tourist.
I also love Rick's personal touches on his self-guided walking tours. My favorites are his Renaissance walking tour through Florence, and the self-guided cruise along the Grand Canal in Venice. Another chance to travel like a local.
One thing I've noticed with these guidebooks is that the overall text does not change from year to year. Of course, current details such as prices and phone numbers are updated yearly, but that type of information is often obsolete by the time the book is published. So you may as well save money and buy an older edition.
Hope you enjoy this guide as much as I do!
He has saved us money, stress, and time.
It's like traveling with a local without having to deal with having another person with you on your vacation.
Now if your a seasoned traveler, you may want to graduate to something else, however if you want to go somewhere you have never been and save money in long lines at museums, and find a restauant that reminds you of what your Grandmother would make if she were French, Rick Steves books will help you do all of that.
- The book is divided up by city. We chose the cities we were planning on visiting and then read those chapters before we planned our trip details.
- The cultural details that the book described are totally accurate.
- Some of the best restaurants we ate at were recommended in the book. Listen to Rick!
I also like how he gave advise on ways to save time and money on your trip. His website is also very helpful with tips. We actually used his site to purchase all of our train tickets before we left for Italy.
I would suggest following Rick Steves advice and tear up the book. We did not go to every city in the book so there was no need to bring an almost 400 page book. So, I cut out each section like he advises in the book. Then, we left the at the AirB&Bs we stayed at for the next guests to use. It was a great way to lighten our load as we went.
