My wife and I have been to Europe 4 times in the last 10 years. The most important companion for us is Rick Steves. Every time I go I purchase other guide books, but when it comes down to the best advice and recommendations, you cannot beat Rick. The Rome book is very thorough and every place He recommended came as he said, never over glossed, just honest advice. He also has the best advice on transportation needs which is where most guide books fail. Getting around Rome was a breeze with his directions.
Great book!!

I enjoy Rick Steves' sense of humor, and he lays out the major tourist sites (as well as several not so major sites.) The format is easy to read, and the book contains a lot of very useful information for first time visitors to Rome. I specifically love the "walks" that are suggested in the book - scenic walking tours that you can do on your own with directions, what to look for, etc.

I'm giving it 4 rather than 5 stars because the book focuses a lot of attention on the very touristy areas west of the central train station, and doesn't give enough details about areas to the south and hardly any details about areas to the east. But, if you plan to stay/tour in the main historical center and/or Vatican City, then this book is fantastic!

This Rome travel guide is very practical, thorough, and easy to use. It includes descriptions, maps, and time saving ideas. Of particular interest is information on how to save money on meals, hotels, and sites. The ROMA Pass is an excellent example.

We love the book. It's perfect for our up coming trip to Rome! We even booked our hotels from the web-sites provided in the book. He clearly covers everything needed for your travel plans. We will be booking our tours from the web-sites. We plan to take this book plus Rick Steves' Florence & Tuscany 2012 with us!! We highly recomend this book!

I try to use Rick Steves' books whenever i go to Europe. This was my 2nd and i HIGHLY recommend! We were also able to incorporate his podcasts as well, which was nice for the colesseum and the Roman Forum. Steve gives great tips and using those, we were able to buy tickets for sites in not very well known locations, saving us from waiting on 2 hour lines! Its as if you have your own personal tour guide. His maps are very helpful as well. Much more personal like tour book than a frommers or fodors...highly recommend!

Great book. I carried it every where in Rome. The only thing I didn't see were thieves, and pickpockets. Rick Steves emphasizes that point. Be cautious, but don't let it ruin your vacation. Rome and its people are wonderful. I did use a moneybelt as suggested. Maybe thats why I had no issues.

We bought the books for Rome, Florence, and Paris and they provided great advice and we consulted them throughout the trip. I couldn't have asked for more.

We use his books with any trip we can. He is usually really helpful on where to go and what to do and especially things to avoid. He will tell you what tricks people use to con tourists out of money and it is really a nice thing to know. His food suggestions were amazing this time around. We ate at least 4 of his recommended restaurants in this book and they were all worth it. These guides are a great way to plan your trip. He tells you the areas of town that are "safe" or not and where to stay. We have only booked in one hotel he recommended but we always keep to his map of dangerous and safe when traveling. Must have for Rome.
