About the Author

Since 1973, Rick Steves has spent about four months a year exploring Europe. His mission: to empower Americans to have European trips that are fun, affordable, and culturally broadening. Rick produces a best-selling guidebook series, a public television series, and a public radio show, and organizes small-group tours that take over 30,000 travelers to Europe annually. He does all of this with the help of more than 100 well-traveled staff members at Rick Steves' Europe in Edmonds, WA (near Seattle). When not on the road, Rick is active in his church and with advocacy groups focused on economic and social justice, drug policy reform, and ending hunger. To recharge, Rick plays piano, relaxes at his family cabin in the Cascade Mountains, and spends time with his son Andy and daughter Jackie. Gene Openshaw has co-authored a dozen Rick Steves books, specializing in writing walks and tours of Europe's cities, museums, and cultural sites. He also contributes to Rick's public television series, produces tours for Rick Steves Audio Europe, and is a regular guest on Rick's public radio show. Outside of the travel world, Gene has co-authored The Seattle Joke Book. As a composer, Gene has written a full-length opera called Matter, a violin sonata, and dozens of songs. He lives near Seattle with his daughter, enjoys giving presentations on art and history, and roots for the Mariners in good times and bad.

Guidebook author and travel TV host Rick Steves is America's most respected authority on European travel. Rick took his first trip to Europe in 1969, visiting piano factories with his father, a piano importer. As an 18-year-old, Rick began traveling on his own, funding his trips by teaching piano lessons. In 1976, he started his business, Rick Steves' Europe, which has grown from a one-man operation to a company with a staff of 100 full-time, well-travelled employees at his headquarters in Washington state. There he produces more than 50 guidebooks on European travel, America's most popular travel series on public television, a weekly hour-long national public radio show, a weekly syndicated column, and free travel information available through his travel center and ricksteves.com. Rick Steves' Europe also runs a successful European tour program. Rick Steves lives and works in his hometown of Edmonds, Washington. His office window overlooks his old junior high school.

I got quite a few guide books. At the last minute (less than a week before we left), I ordered this one. I wish I had gotten it sooner, and had more time to see all that was in it (before figuring out how awesome it is on our final days). This was, by far, the most useful of the numerous guidebooks we got. Loved being able to use the book for our spur of the moment pantheon tour on the last day! Wish I had realized it had tours of some of the museums we aimlessly wandered through beforehand!

I LOVE Rick Steves guide books. I have purchased more than a dozen of them for our many trips to European countries. If you are going to Europe and will make your own way, not on a tour, these books will provide the info you will need to move around, eat well and find decent lodgings. For example, if I am traveling through a city by train and I want to see a museum and then get back on the train, where do I leave my luggage while a visit the city for the day? In a mountainous region, how do I get from the train station to the city center? Where can I do laundry? Who is the best guide in a city or region? What days museums are closed or free (and super crowded). This book is updated for 2021 and it's a treasure. No matter how many times I go to Europe, I always pick up RS latest guide books.

This book is fascinating. There are many things in here that I thought were great for someone who has never been to Italy. All the hotel info was practically useless though. The places mentioned are impossible to book or totally unresponsive. Many want you to email them a credit card number vs call them even if the call costs them nothing. It’s truly bizarre. Your information is totally unsafe. It’s a nice idea to want to support mom and pops or places with ambience but if they are impractical to book what can you do? Also the tips about finding reduced expense by going straight to the hotelier doesn’t really turn out to be true or at least meaningful. You’re going to find the best deal on a site like booking etc. You just are. And most of the time you can find places with free cancelations too. The other tips in this book about what to see and when and practicalities were useful. I think this book is a good primer for getting oriented.
