Virginia cool meets Kentucky thunder in a collaboration between genre-bending pianist Bruce Hornsby and multi-instrumental virtuoso Ricky Skaggs that expands the terrain of bluegrass. Highlights include a meditative, minor-key transformation of Hornsby's "Mandolin Rain" (with Skaggs on the title instrument) and a downhome revival of "A Night on the Town," though newer originals such as "The Dreaded Spoon" seem slight in comparison. The traditional "Across the Rocky Mountain" and original instrumental "Stubb" shift the spotlight to Skaggs, though Hornsby's sophisticated chord progressions fit fine within the backing of Skaggs's Kentucky Thunder band. Guests include Jerry Douglas and Stuart Duncan, with John Anderson contributing vocals to a wild-card rendition of Rick James's "Super Freak," which provides the closing bluegrass hoedown. --Don McLeese

I saw the CMT show before I bought the album. That was good in some ways and bad in others. Seeing the show I heard the story behind "The Dreaded Spoon" which makes listening to the song more understandable. It's the kind of song only Bruce Hornsby can write. Seeing the musicianship and joy of the musicians transforms itself when I listen to the CD. I wish some of the songs from the show were on the CD, but the more I listen to the CD the more I appreciate the songs that weren't on the show. Now Ricky and Bruce need to come out with a 2 CD live album. I've never heard a piano play with a Bluegrass band, but Bruce pulls it off as if it's the most natural thing in the world. Two great musicians, one great band equals one great TV show and one great album. Hopefully more will come. I highly recommend this album.

Well, I love Bruce Hornsby's music and one fine day i was looking for his music on the internet and up popped this Album with Ricky Scaggs! I only listened to about 3 clips and realised this would be a fab album to add to my collection.
And so it's turned out to be. I listen to it a lot, when friends are round they often ask me who it is and i'm pleased to let them know. It's a great album, beautifully put together, first class playing by two class musicians evidently completely in tune with each other and enjoying what they do! Thank you Ricky & Bruce! Oh, mustn't forget the other great musicians playing on the album. Thanks to you guys too -)
Would i recommend this album? 100% yes.
That i enjoy Bluegrass helps of course!!

The moment I saw them on the morning news show on some channel, I was completely enraptured. What a sound!!! It blew me away. I had to have it in my CD library. Then I bought it for my brother who is a huge Hornsby as well as Skaggs fan like me. Together - they were pure gold. I loved the rendition of "Mandolin Rain" as well as their bluegrass remake of "SuperFreak" - I am forever warped by that! Would be cool to see them on tour, and hope to see more great cross-over duos like that out there sometime.

I've been a Skaggs and Hornsby fan for over 20 years. I've heard them together on " Will The Circle Be Unbroken" Album 1989 Volume Two ( Nitty Gritty Dirt Band) and all of their respective individual albums. I've also had the privilege of experiencing Ricky, and Bruce perform live. Mr Skaggs is a pure soulful
Blue Grass artist, best mando player on the planet, and Mr Hornsby has redefined the Piano
As a vital instrument in popular music. He is a virtuoso Genius. Both of these musicians can cross over to any Genre in the blink of an eye, and add their own inventive style.
Together they are like a breath of fresh air.
This album is vital "NewGrass" for the crossover enthusiast who likes variety and expert trained musicianship.
Bravo Ricky and Bruce!!

Great CD, and great performers. Ricky Skaggs can play about any kind of music, thank goodness he came back to Bluegrass though. He can take about any song and make it fit into the genre of Bluegrass and make it sound like it was originally made for bluegrass music. Bruce is also a great piano player that can fit into about any style of music and make it sound great.

Bluegrass virtuoso Ricky Skaggs and musician extraordinaire Bruce Hornsby combine talents on this inspired CD that makes for many hours of happy listening. The tracks share the flavors of American Southern traditions, from bluegrass to story-based ballads like "Night on the Town," but otherwise represent an assortment of styles. It's wonderful to hear the combination of many American musical genres in this album, and equally exciting to hear two great musicians experiment and *play* with sound (yeah, that's why they call it *playing*). Highly recommended.

More Bruce Hornsby's style than Ricky Skaggs's, this is a great album, well worth the purchase price just for three songs: the newly-stylized version of "Mandolin Rain" will break your heart; the Jazz-Bluegrass fusion and subtle lyrics of "Crown of Jewels" will have you listening again and again; and the super-fast hillbillyized version of "Super Freak!" will have you singing and dancing.

Hot piano and hot mandolin!

Strongly recommended for fans of either one of these great musicians.

If you are really into Bluegrass you will probably like this cd as it does offer quality instramentals but Hornsby's voice just doesn't fit this musical genre imo. There are certainly better cds to own from Bruce (Big Swing Face isn't one of them) so hard core fans might like this cd...most others won't though.

5.0 out of 5 stars
