Product description
Riddick (Br+Dv+Dc+Uv)
Amazon.com
Pitch Black, the first collaboration between writer-director David Twohy and Vin Diesel, stands as a model genre movie, presenting an ingeniously taut narrative while also giving Diesel ample room to develop an antihero for the ages. The success of that film led to the unexpectedly baroque The Chronicles of Riddick, which greatly expanded the scope, but to somewhat diminished effect. The duo's third go-around wisely returns to the roots of the character, delivering a small-scale, gleefully vulgar film that occasionally resembles a berserk sci-fi version of Man vs. Wild. Featuring some way-cool critters and no shortage of gallows humor, it knows exactly what it is: half B-movie, half awesome 1970s van art. Quickly dispensing with the ornate mythology of the last installment (respect to Karl Urban for returning, however briefly), the story finds Riddick left for dead, on a planet where absolutely everything wants to eat him. As he begins his quest to dominate the local flora and fauna, matters are complicated by the appearance of two teams of bounty hunters (including Katee Sackhoff and the gargantuan Dave Bautista) searching for his chromed dome. Twohy keeps things mean and reasonably lean throughout, giving the squabbling mercenaries some enjoyably hissable personality traits while hurtling toward an intense siege finale. Fun as Riddick's second half is, though, it's that primal, largely nonverbal first section that makes the film really work, paring back the character to his rumbling alpha-male essence as he pummels his way up the food chain. At a time when most entries in the genre either swell to ill-fitting blockbuster proportions or devolve into winking irony, there's something rather admirable about those just content to deliver the disreputable goods. Long may Space Conan reign. --Andrew Wright

The positives: Riddick's "force-of-nature" charisma. Not sure why everybody calls him an anti-hero. Johns is an anti-hero. Riddick is a niche waiting to be found. His character reveals a universe out of alignment simply by comparison. He lives truthfully and everyone resents him for it. He's miss-labeled, completely underutilized, a veritable Audi being used to deliver pizzas; Riddick galls the Necromongers by being the antithesis of death. The dude just wants to go home, but for some inexplicable reason--he rubs everyone the wrong way.
The reality is, Riddick is exactly who you want with you when walking into Mordor (where one just doesn't walk), or traversing the mines of Moria. He's survives.
Another positive: The Dog. The dog was not only realized beautifully via CGI, but seeing Riddick grab it and slide under the pincher creature to escape to greener pastures, while simultaneously disembowling it was one of the best scenes, if not the best scene, in the whole film.
What I missed: really lovable mercs like Nick Chinlund. The mercs generally speaking, with the slight exception of Dahl and Johns were ... kinda boring, though I did like the kid. In fact, I wondered why the kid was even there with all of them and did he make it off the planet? I don't remember. I hope so.
Another thing that was missing was Riddick rawhiding spaceships - and this may have been a budget thing. Maybe they simply couldn't afford cgi scenes with cool skiffs skimming the atmosphere and such, but it was sorely missed - especially with Riddick at the helm. The merc ships were ho-hum in design and the Necromongers ... well, aside from Karl Urban, they remained as borning as they were in The Chronicles of Riddick.
All in all, to see our favorite Furyan in full survival mode during the first part of the film was worth the price of the download.
SPOILER ALERT !!!!!!!
Similar story line to Pitch Black.
First and foremost, I love the Vin Diesel character "Riddick." But truth be told, if you don't go for this type of Sci-Fi then just watch "The Chronicles of Riddick (TCOR)." It is one of my favorite movies. This movie picks up where TCOR left off, with Riddick bored and paranoid after assuming the role of the Grand Marshal. You simply have to watch TCOR in order to get this. He arranges with some of his enemies to take him back to his home world (Furia). But instead, he winds up on "not furia." A backstabbing betrayal by the Necromongers leaves him stranded and slightly wounded on this far away hostile planet.
What follows is a great story of adaptation, survival and good old fashion "I'm the alpha and you would have saved a whole lot of lives and butt-kicking if you had just started with that." But no, after battling through some really hideous, poisonous and downright scary reptile like monsters and befriending a really cool looking alien dog (the dog steals the show with every appearance) Riddick emerges in to a fairly safe part of the planet with no monsters (as of yet). He stumbles up on an abandoned relay station and sends out a distress call.
Two different ships of mercs show up to try and hunt him down for the bounty on his head. What happens after that is some really good story telling by whoever made up this story. At this point if you want to find out what takes place in this final installment for the Riddick franchise I suggest you watch the film. This movie will not win any Oscars, but the action, suspense, drama and CG effects are outstanding. There's LOT'S of action and plenty of Riddick slays the bad guys (Heck Riddick slays everybody, good and bad). Some great one liners and Katee Sakhoff and Matt Nable, both deliver great performances. It helps a lot if you are familiar with the earlier works, especially "Pitch Black", but if you are not you should still enjoy this film.
I hope you find this helpful, and you keep a stiff spine.

Then bounty hunters--two rival teams --want Riddick dead or alive but mostly dead.
Riddick quickly shows them that their plan is not his plan. So guess what his plan is. Go ahead, guess. He has to fight off alien monsters who live on the planet and these two rival teams of bounty hunters. And get away.
I watched the movie on the edge of my seat. Some visual references to the movie Pitch Black is a nice touch.
