The Riddler: Year One (2022-) #1 Kindle & comiXology

4.7 out of 5 stars 220 ratings

Actor and writer Paul Dano understands the Riddler’s every motivation… As depicted in Matt Reeves’s hit movie The Batman, the Riddler wasn’t simply an amusing eccentric with an affinity for wordplay and baffling clues, but as terrifying a villain as any in the annals of the Dark Knight. Here you can see Edward Nashton evolve into the menace known as the Riddler. How did an unknown forensic accountant uncover the dark secrets of Gotham’s underworld and come so close to bringing down the entire city? This six-issue miniseries is an immediate prequel to The Batman-the detailed, disturbing, and at times shocking story of a man with nothing to lose. Artist Stevan Subic makes his American comics debut, collaborating with Dano to deliver a shadowy and gritty tale of a society’s forgotten man who refuses to go unnoticed any longer. Subic’s recent Conan the Cimmerian for French publisher Glénat has brought him great acclaim in Europe, and he’s about to break out globally with a Batman series unlike any you’ve seen before.

He did an amazing acting job as the riddler. He does an awesome job writing the riddler! This is a character study! Dano shows the day and night cycle of this tortured character. It’s just fascinating. I can’t wait for the rest!

Beautiful art style, really cool interpretation of the Gotham established in the film. Really good writing and a very unique and imo super cool visual realization of Batman.

I like how he seems like a good guy but just an awkward fellow, even though he is like woe is me. I wonder how he will be driven to break and become the killer he is in Batman.

The only thing I didn't like was that it was short; I wanted more! I can't wait for the next one.

Couldn't stop reading. Can't wait for more. I don't like prequels but learning how the riddler got to where he was in The Batman has been very intriguing.

I don't typically read comics, but went for this after the style caught my eye. Didn't disappoint! I'll be following the series.

As a big fan of the Batman comics, I think did a great spin on The Riddler. Can't wait to read more !!

Paul Dano dives deep into the character of Edward Nashton once more to bring this dark and twisted origin story to life. It fits like the missing puzzle piece into Matt Reeves Batman universe and expands on what made this gifted but helpless nobody finally snap.

Stevan Subic's art brings an unnerving and jaded outlook to Gotham City and allows the reader to plant themselves in Eddie's shoes on every page.

If this first issue is only a taste of what's to come, this will be considered a standout for the DC Black Label brand and leave fans hungry for more stories from Dano and Reeves universe.

EN: As a fan of The Batman movie, I was excited to dive into The Riddler: Year One comic, and it did not disappoint. The storyline offers an intriguing approach to the character's early life, gradually showing his transformation into the infamous villain. The writing is accessible, making it easy for readers to follow along with the plot while still delivering deeper layers of the character’s psyche. The artwork strikes a balance between abstract and concrete, complementing the narrative and enhancing the reader's understanding of the character's descent into madness. The blend of art and story makes this a must-read for any fan of The Riddler or Batman lore.

I was looking forward to this and it did not disappoint at all. Great artwork, but the story of Edward nashton is the main draw here and I really like how it feels like something straight from a noir psychological thriller, in keeping with the movie. Paul dano has done a great job in writing this. Can't wait for more in the exciting story arc.
