Putting this machine together out of the box was very easy. I put in four screws with a phillips head. Then with a hammer I put a cap on the axle and put two large high quality plastic wheels on followed by the other end cap with the hammer. I used a rubber mallet for the two hub caps. Then the two front caster wheels pushed in easily. The push handle and carry basket easily slipped on.
I purchased the Ridgid accessory 10 foot extension hose. I attached this to the hard plastic hose that came with the machine. Machine, hard plastic hose, extension hose. The Ridgid accessory hose comes with connectors for all their machines. Very easy and straight forward. I believe this is an invaluable accessory and for me I probably would have been happier with an even longer hose. It does not appear to affect the suction.
I put the long plastic extension accessory tips vertical onto the spots on the back of the machine for storage. The other plastic ends I put in the handle basket. Finding a place for the hoses on the machine is tough. The cord, 20 ft, wraps around the top.
I took the machine for a test ride on the back carpeted stairs of the house. I did the top and front of the carpeted steps. The first thing I noticed was that this machine is quiet. It is probably more quiet than the standard cheap hoover vacuums I have. I was shocked how quiet it is, so much more than my last industrial vacuum which was a deafening screamer. The second thing I noticed was this thing really sucked. I gave it the hickey test on my arm and it passed with flying colors. I would compare it to better or the same as the industrial vacuum you find at the car washes.
Using the angled rectangular tip accessory I was able to do all the stairs up to four from the top. I left the machine downstairs and worked my way up. I was able to get all the corners, and the front of the carpeted steps. It grabs the carpet and sucks down hard, sort of like the arm hickey. What was amazing was when I opened the machine. The amount of dirt and dust that was removed was shocking, more than I expected and I thought my house was very clean. The filter that came with the machine worked well. This is my allergy season and I did the work without a sneeze, and there was no appreciable dust from the machine or the muffler.
I'm now going to bring the machine up stairs to finish the top four from above. Then I'm going around the carpeted areas of the house to get all the corners. It is big, and empty still a bit heavy, but manageable to get around the house and up and down stairs.
The one negative and the reason for only four stars is the warranty. I have read reviews across the internet and the warranty is great until you have to use it. Ridgid makes the determination of the "lifetime". It is not your lifetime, but that of the machine. When the blower motor dies, then that was the end of the machines lifetime. Those who send their part back and pay for shipping seem to get a response that the machine's life is over and if they want the parts back, they have to pay to get them shipped back. If your machine dies in a year, then that is the extent of your warranty. It does not appear that the brushes on the motor are repairable. Because of this I consider this a throw away machine when it dies, rather than dealing with Ridgid's warranty system. Also not having a time on their warranty will make it impossible to use your extended warranty you get on some credit cards.
I did not try the machine on "wet".
The filter it came with was good for cleaning up debris in the attic, and it's nice that they're washable. I used the blower to help dry the filter after washings. I got about 3-4 washings out of the filter before I tossed it. That filter does a good job for general purpose uses. During drywall, I switched to the top end filter and filter bags to catch all the drywall dust, it worked like a charm.
I use it as a blower almost as much as I use it as a vacuum. The blower is very strong and makes quick work of the yard. No complaints at all about the blower.
- Very powerful, Long filter life, Can suck a lot between filter cleanings/changes, Maintains suction for quite a long time
-The exhaust on the vacuum is strong too, it would blow stuff everywhere if it was pointed in a bad direction. They sell a muffler attachment for it though.
Overall I'm very happy with my purchase.
