Product Description

It's 5 o'clock somewhere! These Riedel martini glasses are the perfect match for cocktail hour. Designed for the home bartender, these glasses feature a rather elegant, yet frugal size of 4-5/8 ounces; a more humble approach to martinis and great for self-proclaimed lightweights. As always, Riedel delivers top-notch quality in gorgeous lead crystal, with classic style. Packed in a set of 2, these glasses stand 5-7/8 inches tall, with a full capacity of 4-5/8 ounces.

Amazon.com

There's something very satisfying about the inverted cone shape of the classic martini glass. Riedel makes the Vinum martini glass in a smaller size than many, holding up to 4-5/8 ounces of a favorite Manhattan or gin martini. Measuring approximately six inches in height, each of the two glasses in this set feels beautifully balanced with a lanky stem that is not so thin that it is likely to snap during a lively cocktail party.

Made in Bavaria of more than 24 percent lead crystal for superb brilliance and clarity, Vinum wine glasses are nevertheless affordable because they are machine-made rather than mouth-blown. Since its introduction in 1986, the popular Vinum collection has grown to contain nearly two dozen different glasses. While all Vinum glassware is dishwasher-safe, Riedel recommends washing the crystal by hand to prevent detergent residue that can affect wine taste. --Ann Bieri

Everybody who makes cheap glassware should be looking to this puppy for inspiration. A martini glass is not meant to be a home for a goldfish, it is meant to hold 3-4oz of gently chilled, vermouth scented gin, the perfect amount to be able to consume before it gets cold. Want more martini in your glass? Make another one you lazy fool.

The Riedel Vinum is my go to red wine glass for tasting. I taste a couple hundred wines a year and this is my most trusted glass. I like the Riedel Vinum Extreme Cabernet/Merlot Glasses, Set of 2 a little better for looks and with some wines that I really want to concentrate the aroma of, but this Vinum wine glass is my overall favorite.

I posted a picture showing the various glasses that I have been using for side-to-side taste tests with. The choice of glass does matter, so it is important to match the wine to the glass. In general, match the type of glass with the varietal of wine being tasted. However, even with glasses that are for the same type, there are differences between manufacturers.

The Vinum glass makes all my reds taste good. There are more specialized glasses that make certain wines taste better out of certain glasses. Some of the larger glasses shown in the pictures are better for the large and robust red wines. However, an older wine with more subtle flavors and balance actually tastes better from the smaller glass (this reviewed Vinum).

The largish bowl helps the aroma develop. They are really good to swirl the wine with and release the flavors to your nose (you really taste with your nose). The rim is nice and thin which is great. The balance in your hand is nice; it is not too light to feel like it will break in your hand, but also not heavy so it distracts from the wine. A good glass almost disappears in your mind when you are drinking. You notice it when the wine is poured. You notice the feel in your hand and the feel against your lips. Then the glass should just get out of the way.

I've recently been reintroducing myself to brandy, having focused my attention over the last years on wine and whiskies. When I noticed my glassware had a huge hole in it--no brandy snifter--I did some research and discovered that snifters hadn't been taken seriously by cognac lovers for a long time. Too much surface area means too much alcohol in the nose and much of the fruit from the cognac is lost in the burn.

The glasses have been every bit as perfect for brandy and cognac as advertised and they are easily the most beautiful glasses in an extensive collection. They're even gorgeous when they're empty (although better with cognac, of course).

I had a set of these glasses already and my husband broke one of them, I was glad to see I could find them on Amazon! (you can find ANYTHING on Amazon!)

this is the perfect martini glass....small (I think it's under 5 oz.) but when you want a martini w/o a hangover, this is the glass to get. I would rather make myself a couple of small ones and control my pace, then 1 big one that warms up too fast.

Great glass!

I just picked up eight of these (Riedel 416/60) and found them to be the least well made Riedel Vinum glasses I've seen. Four of the eight stems had clearly visible casting lines down into the foot, and you could feel the ridge on all but one or two of the glasses.
I am also not fond of the large logo spelling out RIEDEL on the bottom of the glass. I didn't even like the smaller initials they used to use. I want to think about what I'm drinking; I don't need to be reminded who made the stemware.
Like the other Riedel glasses, the port glasses are extremely well balanced. For a glass so short with such a relatively large bowl, a thick, heavy foot is required for balance compared to the other glasses, which get away with relatively thin and light feet due to the leverage of longer stems and wider feet. Like their prestige cuvee champagne glasses, Riedel's port glasses are heavy, which feels nice in the hand, like good silver.
The Riedel port glasses are the preferred shape for port, and can be used for other port-like drinks such as Banyuls (which is a relatively inexpensive, long-lived, grenache-noir-based fortified wine that's worth seeking out, especially for pairing with chocolate). I also use the port glasses for dessert wines of all kinds. This matches what I see in restaurants worldwide and works well for me, even if Riedel has a series of other recommendations for various dessert wines. Riedel's least expensive line of glassware labels this shape simply as "spirits", so it's not a stretch to put them into service for whisky, cognac, etc.
Like all other heavy lead content crystal (24% here), be very careful washing them. Scratchy sponges, abrasive cleaner, grit in the sink, etc., will leave marks.

I was a little concerned after reading the reviews regarding the possible misrepresentation on the glasses being made in Austria by Riedel, but mine were machine made crystal made by Riedel in Austria. Washed them and tried them out immediately on some recent 1997 vintage port and they were super. Although the port was very young, the glasses really brought out the flavor in a side by side comparison. Great for entertaining, and a super value!
