Is this a bargain, or what? This new freebee pack gets you eight ( yes, 8!) Riedel O Cabernet stemless tumblers for the price of six! Designed by 11th generation, Maximilian Riedel, these Riedel O Cabernet/Merlot tumblers are reminiscent of the Vinum bowls, only without the stem. Trendy and sophisticated, these tumblers will perform much like Riedel's preceding wineglass creations, but will also fit easily into the dishwasher or cupboard without the worries of breaking the stem. For those who would like to experience the concept of matching the shape of the glass to the grape without the traditional stemmed glass, these Riedel O wine tumblers are the answer!

But it's a bit much that Riedel has decided to offer slightly different sizes and shapes of glasses for each major type of wine. This is the ultimate in what economists and call "product differentiation," a well-worn marketing strategy to expand the market for the original product.
Offering wine-specific glasses is based on the dubious assumption that a wine will taste better in a glass that is designed especially for it. Red wines might arguably need bigger glasses for wine fresh out of the bottle that needs to breathe a bit -- for sippers who can't wait for that first sip. But a little patience eliminates even that justification.
Another part worth paying a little more for these is longevity of the design. When I needed glasses for entertaining, over a year after first purchasing, I was still able to buy another matching set.
I would like to save them for guests because they are fine crystal and I'm a little afraid I will break them if I use them all the time, but Hubs says he likes them and they are his and he's going to use them every night, so there you are. I have put them through the dishwasher and they actually all came out fine - I made sure to separate them from other glassware before I ran it though. Reidel has a whole series of different sizes for different types of wine, so you can collect them all and they will all coordinate.
Update April 2015: We have 5 left out of the original 8. I broke the 3 we lost. Hubs still loves them and we have run them through the dishwasher for however many years it has been, and then are still shiny and clear. Nice glasses.
