The Riedell R3 Roller Skate is a combination of comfort and performance. It features a comfortable man-made vinyl boot with a durable PowerDyne Thrust plate, toe stop, bearings, and quality Cayman wheels.

I wish I had done more research before I bought these skates, and learned that there's a better pair of skates for fresh meat beginners. And that's the sure-grip rebels. Practically the same price except sure-grip includes a leather boot which is 1000 times more comfortable than riedell r3, better plates, and also included are Fugitive wheels that are pretty good quality that don't need to be upgraded, whereas with these riedell r3s you would have to immediately switch out their Caymen wheels because they are crap. A fellow fresh meat on my league used these skates and by the end of our practice she would have all the dirt and dust and dead skin cells from the track stuck to her Caymen wheels. I looked down at my sure-grip Fugitive wheels...clean and smooth as a whistle. I was so thankful I had switched skates before practice time. Pretty shocking to see the difference since both skates are practically the same price when you factor in that you would need to replace the riedell wheels. Also, the riedell r3's are a much narrower fit and not at all comfortable for wide feet. I'm not sure why these riedell r3 are so popular for beginners. Perhaps to gain profit from the additional wheels and bearings you would need to absolutely purchase to skate in them. The boots are made of stiff material, vinyl I believe. I may be wrong but they are definitely stiff and painful. The tongue was stiff and poked into my leg even without lacing to the very top.

I purchased the Riedell R3 and they arrived promptly on time. The only thing that I did not like about the skates were the wheels. The stock Sonar Caymans were slippery on a wooden floor. I purchased some Crazy Whites, see photo, and they are great. The boot contour feels great on my feet and they fit snugly. I "LOVE" them!!!!!! View the video and look at this 54 year old speed skate, only two months. :)

Plate Broke after 11 months of derby use

I bought these as beginner skates for roller derby. I play in a pretty casual league, and these still have my first set of laces, toe stops, and wheels, but tonight at practice my plate cracked and my front wheels turned sideways. This is a major bummer because I have my one year derby-versarry tomorrow and a bout in 2 days and now I have no skates. Women on my team have r3s that have lasted years, and I am very disappointed that these came so highly recommended and have let me down. I am 155 lbs, btw, and have never even skated outside in these skates. I practiced in them for about 2x a week for 9 months and bouts 4 times.

This boot and plate is great for roller derby fresh meat. My biggest complaint is that the wheels made me feel inadequate as a skater, I couldn't figure out why I couldnt plow stop, or even T-stop! I finally switched my wheels to Halos and couldn't believe the change in control. The stock wheels were too wide, & too gritty. I also jad to change the laces, they were way too short!

Good starter derby skate, but expect to spend money on modifications

I’m new to roller derby and I got these skates. When I asked my team about skates, they all recommended these for fresh meat. I like them, but there’s a few things you should know before buying them.

1) The toes wear out very quickly. If you plan on buying these, add toe guards to your cart as well. The toes on these skates wear out fast. I saw a significant amount of damage to the toes after one practice without toe guards.

2) Also add bigger toe stops to your cart. The posts on the toe stops that come with the skates are pretty short, and the toe stops are pretty narrow. If you are using these for derby, you’ll want bigger toe stops (the gear expert on my team recommended Gumball brand)

3) If you are a lighter skater, you’ll want different cushions. I was told that I should get new cushions because I wasn’t heavy enough for the cushions to compress to stabilize the trucks (I weigh ~135 lbs).

Long story short, I like the skates as a beginner, but you’ll probably want to invest in some extra stuff. It’s a good starting point for a roller derby skate, but I fully expect to buy something higher quality in the next year or two.

2 things I would like to see changed in the future. One would be to resolve the issue with the front brake falling off of the skates when people are skating. I about broke some bones when the front brake fell off while I was skating. Regular skaters seem to think this is just something that happens but it really needs more intelligent engineering. Second thing I would like to see is a quick visual guide on how to properly adjust all of the various nuts on the skates. Again, it seems that there is an assumption that people should accept this lack of information as experienced skaters know this stuff, so no need to provide quick and easy visual instruction for beginners. Having made those 2 suggestions I want to finish with the overall fact that these are great skates with leather boot, great features, and provide great exercise and a whole lot of fun when your brakes don't end up causing you to crash on the concrete.

I bought these Riedell skates hoping that they were as good as some of the reviews I read. Unfortunately they were terribly uncomfortable, the wheels are very slippery ( indoor wheels )
The fabrication isn’t as good as the description on the skates!!!! Also, very cheap plastic bottom.
BE WARNED FOLKS!!! AND on top of it all, I HAD TO PAY FOR THE RETURN OF THE SKATES. $40.00.
Are they kidding me!!!!
I don’t recommend these skate at all. I will stick to the best of the best. VNLA Brand.

Right skate is shorter than the Left skate Size 8 and ~7.5?

I first try them out of the box and the right skate is shorter than the left skate. After half an hour my toes were numb. I believe the right skate is actually a 7.5 size, which to me is a defect since these skates do not come in half sizes.
***UPDATE 1/7/2020***
After getting in contact with the seller, I tried and used a shoe stretcher and let it stretch for three days and it fixed the issue. I decided to find a solution instead of shipping and waiting. Also, I want to thank the seller for the prompt assistance and willingness to resolve. Thanks again.
