well. . . I thought it was pretty cool. The visuals alone are worth two stars. Most of the acting was pretty good, also. A few cringe-worthy moments, but only those few. Plot is fun and exciting if not original. I'm looking forward to seeing more from this series. It's certainly enjoyable enough for anyone who's willing to give it a shot on its own clean slate. Drop the presumptions and appreciate the show (or don't) for what it is.

This is not a movie people! It is a collection of SyFy prequel webisodes

The main confusion here, in light of all the negative criticism, is due to the misunderstanding that viewers think this is a movie. It is NOT a movie but rather a collection of Steampunk web episodes created and released online in 10 short segments during late 2010. Collectively it is nothing more than a prequel meant to spawn a TV series on the SyFy Network. For some reason the network never took it on and expanded it from what we see here: a collection of short episodes, some as short as 6 minutes, seamlessly joined together to look like a movie. This series also spawned a book which further prequels this story here.

For what it is Riese is visually unique low budget fantasy that has the charm of a RPG video game replete with lingering narration, the heroine on a quest of self discovery who defeats her obstacles by using elements around her, gathering information, helping others along her journey. Eventually she meets up with others who she needs to help her defeat the big boss and reclaim her throne.

My only gripe is the pacing. It slows down in the middle for a good 25 minutes where nothing really happens. But then it picks back up with action and new revelations that sweetly set up the final showdown preparing for what would have become a brilliant TV series.

Christine Chatelain does well in fleshing out the main role and making Riese gritty yet angelic. She easily could have gone overboard and go Xena-Warrior Princess or worse yet go all Damsel-In-Distress but Christine balances the role a strong woman who can handle herself but is still vulnerable in a world and to situations she does not understand very well. Christine is no Meryl Streep but she does a brilliant job of making her role believable and her character's world believable. Sadly, everyone else comes across as campy actors hamming it up. But to their credit the villains are one dimensional.

The map of the kingdom and naming of towns and characters were unique, very well done and creative. However the religious bad guys calling themselves The Sect and the exiled good guys call themselves The Resistance is very cliche.

The Steampunk costumes and set are exquisitely done considering the small budget and dubious long term commitment that would have been on the mind of the production team.

Overall, I liked this series and as a result I would definitely go read the book to see how it all concludes.

I REALLY wanted to like this because of some of the actors involved, which is why I sat through the entire episode. The writing was atrocious. If there's going to be any hope at all for this series (it is a series, right?) they desperately need new writers. There was no meat to the story, no substance; it was all broth.

Also, they play the credits three times in a row at the end. I wouldn't have noticed except for the fact that the show ended, the credits started to play, and I realized there was about five whole minutes left. Not sure if it was totally accidental or if it was an attempt to pad the episode's length for some reason. I can just imagine someone saying "Oh, no one watches the credits. Just repeat them three times."
