In this highly anticipated follow-up to The Rifle, Andrew Biggio brings to light more untold stories from the quickly vanishing ranks of the veterans of World War II.

Ordinary Men with Extraordinary Purpose

They are called the Greatest Generation, but they were also ordinary men, sharing in all of humanity’s weaknesses and flaws while responding to the call of duty. These are their unforgettable stories—first-person accounts from the last of the soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines who fought the most dreadful war in history, all collected by a veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The idea was simple: travel across the country with a 1945 M1 Garand, the basic U.S. fighting rifle of World War II, ask combat veterans of that war to sign it, and listen carefully as the sight, touch, and feel of that rifle evoke a flood of memories and emotions. In this highly anticipated follow-up to
The Rifle, Andrew Biggio once again reveals the astonishing effect his M1 Garand had on the old warriors who held it.

The passage of time is swiftly snatching from us the last of those men, but the memories of those who remain are vivid and strong. It’s astonishing to see how grasping that rifle brings out those memories—good, bad, terrifying, and heroic.

In Biggio’s riveting account, you will learn:

• What it was like to fight for freedom in the various theaters of World War II

• The obstacles these world-conquerors faced on returning home and how they overcame them

• The special meaning these recollections hold for later combat vets, confirming the brotherhood of warriors

• The importance to veterans of memory and respect

War and the weapons with which it is waged shape men forever. Biggio’s inspirational second collection is a must-read for anyone interested in the service and sacrifices of our veterans.

Andrew has always had passion for history about the second World War since a very young age. Tragically, both of his grandfather's had a brother killed in action during the war. Andrew was taught about sacrifice since childhood. After graduating from Malden Catholic High School in 2006, Andrew enlisted in the U.S. Marines. He served as an infantry rifleman during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan). He finished six years in the Marine Corps as sergeant and earned a bachelors degree in sociology from Suffolk university in Boston, Massachusetts. After college, Andrew felt the need to continue to serve. He was sworn in as a police officer in 2015 where he actively works in Massachusetts Law Enforcement. In 2017 he went on to earn a masters degree in Homeland Security from Northeastern University in Boston. Andrew is the founder of Boston's Wounded Vet Run, New England's largest motorcycle ride dedicated to severely wounded veterans. For the last ten year's Andrew saw the need to assist soldiers, Marines, airmen, and sailors who returned from Iraq/ Afghanistan with injuries. His non-profit has been responsible for housing modifications, new transportation, financial support, and basic living needs for some of America's most severely wounded combat veterans. No salary is collected from his non-profit. While helping his own generation of veterans for the last decade, Andrew saw the urgency to start honoring WWII veterans as they were vanishing at an alarming rate. He saw the need to link their methods of living a successful life after combat and pass it on to today's veterans. This sparked a five- year journey. Over two hundred veterans later, Andrew was fortunate to publish a written experience of the journey called "The Rifle." At the average age of ninety-four, there was one instrument that brought these men and women back to WWII, the M1 Garand rifle. Being the standard issued rifle of that time, each veteran had their own memorable experience with the weapon. Just by grasping the rifle, it acts as time machine bringing them back some seventy-five years. The most magnificent stories would be shared through this rifle.

More of the Greatest Generation
In my review of “The Rifle,” I suggested that Mr. Biggio’s collection of interviews and stories from some of the last of the Greatest Generation would well serve many veterans of later wars. With “The Rifle 2, Back to the Battlefield,” Mr. Biggio again employs his own story to highlight the wartime and post-war stories of several sailors and soldiers of the Second World War.For those who enjoy reading about the exploits of individual soldiers in World War II, this book will certainly not disappoint. The harrowing battles and the reactions of the soldiers who fought them are well-covered in “The Rifle 2.” What Mr. Biggio brings to the game, however, is something more than several written accounts of the horrors of war—he makes it personal. By describing how he found the old soldiers, how he came to meet them, how he overcame their reluctance to speak, and by describing the settings where he interacted with them, he puts the reader at the same tables, in the same bus, and on the same battlefields as he was when conducting the interviews. Not only does he give readers the stories, he also gives readers his own reactions and thoughts. This personal account of interactions with the old soldiers provides context to their lives, both during and after the war.The war stories, just in themselves, would make “The Rifle 2” a worthwhile read, but the book is much more than that. Unlike most authors, Mr. Biggio takes readers on journeys beyond the battlefield. It is this focus on how war shaped their lives that makes “The Rifle 2” so instructive and so unique. Also unlike many books covering individual World War II soldiers, Mr. Biggio doesn’t paint them all as the greatest of heroes. In his quest to collect interviews, he has uncovered some of the era’s more unsavory characters. He doesn’t flinch from telling their stories, and he doesn’t make excuses for their post-war activities. He also gives readers a glimpse at how some veterans fall through the cracks after they’ve served, and provides some first-hand lessons on how hard it can be to help those who have been neglected and forgotten. Through it all, Mr. Biggio applies his own military and law enforcement experiences to help frame the lives of the gentlemen he interviewed. Especially for military veterans, but also for the rest of us, he highlights the difficulties some have in reintegrating into peacetime society.Much like the first “The Rifle,” “The Rifle 2” left me with a much better appreciation for the individual soldiers who fought in World War II. While we can all continue to admire the Greatest Generation, Mr. Biggio reminds us that the individuals in that generation were human—and thus not perfect. Perhaps that is the greatest lesson of the book—we should be careful about painting any group as great, good, or bad, and instead learn about the individuals and the experiences that served to mold their lives.

Another collection of incredible survival and experiences. Most important to me was Andrew taking the necessary steps to help a forgotten veteran and turn his life around! Thank You!🇺🇸

I can’t thank Andrew Biggio enough for taking it upon himself to track down these stories and helping preserve the life and legacies of extraordinary men and women who served in the Second World War. These stories are first hand accounts as told by the aging veterans themselves who carried these experiences with them their whole life. This book and the prior book Mr. Biggio wrote, The Rifle, have inspired me to learn more about the stories of my own family who served in WWII as well as to seek out and appreciate similar stories belonging to those in my own community. Lest we forget the sacrifices these extraordinarily ordinary men and women made when their Flag, and the world, asked them for help. These narratives are extremely powerful and enriching. One could learn more from these accounts than the average individual could in years of primary and higher education. This book and its predecessor are some of the best books I’ve ever read in my life. As someone who fervently loves history, and appreciates learning life lessons taught by those who experienced hell on earth, I reverently implore anyone interested in hearing from WWII veterans themselves to purchase this book and leave a review here on Amazon.

Just as captivating as Part 1. The honest, riveting, and heartfelt soldier's memoirs will have the reader laughing, shouting, and crying - these stories are that emotional. Certainly makes you proud of what these guys went through, endured, and sacrificed for all of us when they were mere teenagers and in their early twenties. Truly a generation this nation will never produce again.

The Rifle 2 by Andrew Biggio is a poignant and heartfelt continuation of the author's exploration into the lives of World War II veterans. As a war veteran himself, Biggio brings a unique perspective to the narratives of these remarkable individuals who served during a pivotal period in history.

This book masterfully captures the essence of the Greatest Generation by delving into the personal stories of these veterans. With deep respect and admiration, Biggio paints vivid portraits of their experiences, allowing readers to glimpse the courage, sacrifice, and resilience that defined this generation.

In a time when the voices of this remarkable generation are growing increasingly scarce, The Rifle 2 becomes a vital record of their experiences. Biggio's storytelling skills shine as he skillfully weaves together the diverse and compelling stories of these veterans, ensuring that their legacy lives on.

Overall, The Rifle 2 is a must-read for anyone interested in history, personal narratives, and the indomitable spirit of those who lived through World War II. It's a touching tribute to the heroes of the past, and it resonates with a deep sense of gratitude for their service and sacrifice. This book serves as a fitting tribute to a generation that will forever be remembered as truly great.

The Rifle: Back to the Battlefield is the perfect follow-up to Volume I. It's superbly written, and full of incredible stories about people who can only be called "Legends." I could not recommend this book more highly, not only for the contents, but because of the mission it supports. If you get a chance, read up on the author, Andy Biggio, and the incredible work he has done and is doing in the service of our cherished Veterans. Buying this book and telling your friends about it is a great way to become a part of that mission. Thank goodness there are still people out there like Andy. He gives me hope that America still knows the way. Many thanks, and all my best wishes to the author and to all who pick up this awesome book!!! You will enjoy this read!!!
