It all started because of a rifle.

The Rifle is an inspirational story and hero’s journey of a 28-year-old U.S. Marine, Andrew Biggio, who returned home from combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, full of questions about the price of war. He found answers from those who survived the costliest war of all -- WWII veterans.

It began when Biggio bought a 1945 M1 Garand Rifle, the most common rifle used in WWII, to honor his great uncle, a U.S. Army soldier who died on the hills of the Italian countryside. When Biggio showed the gun to his neighbor, WWII veteran Corporal Joseph Drago, it unlocked memories Drago had kept unspoken for 50 years. On the spur of the moment, Biggio asked Drago to sign the rifle. Thus began this Marine’s mission to find as many WWII veterans as he could, get their signatures on the rifle, and document their stories.

For two years, Biggio traveled across the country to interview America’s last-living WWII veterans. Each time he put the M1 Garand Rifle in their hands, their eyes lit up with memories triggered by holding the weapon that had been with them every step of the war. With each visit and every story told to Biggio, the veterans signed their names to the rifle. 96 signatures now cover that rifle, each a reminder of the price of war and the courage of our soldiers.

Andrew has always had passion for history about the second World War since a very young age. Tragically, both of his grandfather's had a brother killed in action during the war. Andrew was taught about sacrifice since childhood. After graduating from Malden Catholic High School in 2006, Andrew enlisted in the U.S. Marines. He served as an infantry rifleman during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan). He finished six years in the Marine Corps as sergeant and earned a bachelors degree in sociology from Suffolk university in Boston, Massachusetts. After college, Andrew felt the need to continue to serve. He was sworn in as a police officer in 2015 where he actively works in Massachusetts Law Enforcement. In 2017 he went on to earn a masters degree in Homeland Security from Northeastern University in Boston. Andrew is the founder of Boston's Wounded Vet Run, New England's largest motorcycle ride dedicated to severely wounded veterans. For the last ten year's Andrew saw the need to assist soldiers, Marines, airmen, and sailors who returned from Iraq/ Afghanistan with injuries. His non-profit has been responsible for housing modifications, new transportation, financial support, and basic living needs for some of America's most severely wounded combat veterans. No salary is collected from his non-profit. While helping his own generation of veterans for the last decade, Andrew saw the urgency to start honoring WWII veterans as they were vanishing at an alarming rate. He saw the need to link their methods of living a successful life after combat and pass it on to today's veterans. This sparked a five- year journey. Over two hundred veterans later, Andrew was fortunate to publish a written experience of the journey called "The Rifle." At the average age of ninety-four, there was one instrument that brought these men and women back to WWII, the M1 Garand rifle. Being the standard issued rifle of that time, each veteran had their own memorable experience with the weapon. Just by grasping the rifle, it acts as time machine bringing them back some seventy-five years. The most magnificent stories would be shared through this rifle.

Outstanding Collection of Stories and Life Lessons
If you think “The Rifle” is just another collection of war stories, you would be wrong. Certainly, Mr. Biggio has collected a series of gut-wrenching combat stories from some of the last of the Greatest Generation, but he has done much more than that. In “The Rifle,” Mr. Biggio takes us on a journey into the living rooms, restaurants, bars, and other places where he interviewed the cast of extraordinary characters that tell the combat stories in his book. Along the way, we learn of Mr. Biggio’s own quest to find information about his great uncle who served in the United States Army. That quest, along with his own experience in the military, forms a foundation upon which he builds trusting relationships with the World War II veterans he interviews. The journey includes much self-reflection on military and post-military life, values and morals, and the world around us. His observations on how the veterans adjusted to military life and then transitioned to post-military life are instructive—for those who served as well as for those who never wore the uniform. There are many life lessons in “The Rifle,” and many of them have nothing to do with World War II combat, but rather with living a full and meaningful life. But then, of course, there are the war stories. Mr. Biggio does a masterful job of drawing some difficult memories from the gentlemen he interviewed. The stories are raw and they often reveal mixtures of pride, guilt, remorse, and sorrow. The veterans mourn the loss of friends, and voice their respect for those who never came home. There are moments of humor and anguish…sometimes in the same paragraph. Almost all of the men sustained wounds at some point in their service—physical, emotional, or both. As Mr. Biggio notes, many of the stories have been bottled up for years, with even family and friends unaware of the accomplishments of these remarkable men. At the end of the book, Mr. Biggio lists the honors that the men earned while in uniform. The combat stories themselves are reason enough to read this book, but there is one story that stands out and ties it all together: Chapter 19 – Finding Andy. Even if you don’t read any other part of this book, Finding Andy would make it worth purchasing.I have had the great pleasure to talk to hundreds of World War II veterans over the years. Unfortunately, I did not record those conversations and I’ve forgotten most of the names and ranks of those I met. I wish that I had had the foresight to recognize the importance of recording them and preserving their actions and thoughts for future generations. Fortunately, Mr. Biggio has succeeded where I failed. I strongly encourage anyone interested in World War II to read this book. I would also recommend this book to anyone who is in transition from the military to civilian life, or who is having difficulty coping with post-military life. Finally, I believe that this book is instructive for anyone who believes that the freedoms we enjoy are easy and permanent.

Without a doubt one of the best books I've ever read. Andrew is incredible at taking the stories of these Veterans and translating them to paper in a vivid and gripping way that will keep you turning the pages until the late hours of the night. It was almost impossible to set it down, every chapter a new piece to the WW2 story was set into place straight from the mouths of the men who were on the ground. After watching shows like Band of Brothers, it's easy to forget that there were thousands of other stories that contributed even more to WW2 than just that of Easy Company. By the end of the book, you're left wanting to dive into every documentary and movie just to catch a glimpse of one of the men who signed The Rifle. I started book 2 as soon as I finished the first, and right from the beginning knew it was going to be just as amazing. I want to send a special thank you to Andrew and his team that spent years on this project to bring the stories of these great men to the forefront. Again, this book is truly incredible and should be on everyone's read list.

I have read close to 100 books on WWII. Some which were written decades ago, others that are fairly recent publications. Every story about the experiences of a WWII veteran is an education. The collection of stories that Andrew Biggio has personally collected and shared here is like nothing else I’ve read. The process through which he has been able to get some of the veterans to open up is simple and elegant, yet powerful and poignant. The memories evoked, both emotional and muscle, simply holding an M1 Rifle their hands, help the reader to understand just how powerful the WWII experience was for our soldiers all those years ago. The stories are incredible, and they are perfectly captured and written. And the additional emotional journey that you go on with the author, healing from his own emotional combat wounds by speaking with these veterans, is like nothing else you’ve ever read in a WWII history book.

So… Well… Done.
I’ve only given this book five stars because six doesn’t seem to be an option on Amazon.

I can’t thank Andrew Biggio enough for taking it upon himself to track down these stories and helping preserve the life and legacies of extraordinary men and women who served in the Second World War. These stories are first hand accounts as told by the aging veterans themselves who carried these experiences with them their whole life. This book and the prior book has inspired me to learn more about the stories of my own family who served in WWII as well as to seek out and appreciate similar stories belonging to those in my own community. Lest we forget the sacrifices these extraordinarily ordinary men and women made when their Flag, and the world, asked them for help. These narratives are extremely powerful and enriching. One could learn more from these accounts than the average individual could in years of primary and higher education. This book and its predecessor are some of the best books I’ve ever read in my life. As someone who fervently loves history, and appreciates learning life lessons taught by those who experienced hell on earth, I reverently implore anyone interested in hearing from WWII veterans themselves to purchase this book and leave a review here on Amazon.

Andrew Biggio’s writing in “The Rifle” serves not only as a necessary, eye-opening reminder of the debt we owe to our nation’s veterans, but also as a powerful guiding voice to young veterans of today. The notion of unpacking life beyond combat, the obstacles of returning to life after war, is a massive undertaking – one that Biggio faces head on, fearlessly, as a combat veteran himself. This book is personal, reflecting strength in the vulnerability required to share the inner workings of hurdles faced by present day veterans. Weaving his own family and personal history into the larger fabric of this story, Biggio launches the reader into the novel in a way that reaches and enthralls any reader. His mission to collect the riveting stories of unthinkable bravery shown by these World War II veterans has resulted in the preservation of the memory of these heroes.

The gift of getting to experience these emotional and daunting tales in text, from the perspectives of the very people involved, is not to be taken lightly. It was a privilege to read this work, and you will find yourself immersed in a time that may otherwise have been forgotten. While many things have been publicized about America’s wars, so many “unsung” acts of heroism and feats of incredible warriors may have gone forever unheard. Biggio strove to collect these very stories, taking the reader on a journey across the country to assemble exactly that (and just in time). This book is a must read for any American, a tribute to those who paved the way before us, rich with feeling, facts, and the fight for freedom.

Reviewed in Germany on June 21, 2021
The author of this book, a retired US Marine veteran of two recent military campaigns, had a highly original, and wonderfully executed idea: to interview surviving WWII US Armed Forces veterans, so as to preserve their personal stories for posterity. At the end of each interview, the interviewee would sign his name and campaign on an M1 Garand rifle, the standard service rifle of the US Armed Forces during most of WWII. The veterans' stories are mostly related in the third person, interspersed with the odd verbatim quote, and although the author is not a trained author, he has done a very decent job out of conveying those stories in an engaging manner, resulting in a highly readable work. What strikes the reader is the highly personal takes of the interviewees on their war experiences: no two stories are alike, with each of the veterans having lived the campaigns they participated in in their own, personal way, and processed their implications differently. Overall, this is a great piece of work, which both preserves the memory of the great men of the WWII generation and serves as a rich repository of lessons for future generations, on the experience of war, its effects on the human psyche, and the meaning of service to one's country and people.
