Must-Own Product for ASUS G53 Notebook Owners

ASUS Republic of Gamers G53 and G73 laptops have a major design flaw. Due to the right angling of the power adapter, the connector pin often breaks. When the pin breaks, the laptop can no longer receive power or be charged.

This happened to me three times. ASUS covered the repairs to my G53. However, customers must provide their own packaging to the facility. Furthermore, home pickup is not available.

At one point ASUS was prepared to charge me with shipping and repairs, citing the issue as "customer induced damage." Since I purchased the laptop through Amazon, they graciously offered to reimburse me for any repair cost. Amazon is truly an amazing company. However, ASUS ultimately agreed to pay for shipping and repairs when I called back and pointed out their warranty included accidental damage.

Between calling customer support, finding or buying packing materials, driving 14 miles to my nearest FEDEX drop off, and a 2 week repair turnaround (including shipping time), getting my laptop serviced became quite an ordeal. Without my laptop I could not pay bills online or take my online college classes.

Now imagine your $1000+ notebook is no longer under warranty. Is a converter under $10 (with shipping) worth protecting your investment? For me it was.

This converter redirects the tension placed on the adapter pin. It is also much looser than the ASUS-provided power jack. When the cord gets pulled too hard, the right angle converter simply falls out, instead of the adapter pin becoming damaged.

My laptop would get broken after five or six weeks of use. Three times in seven months, subtracting six weeks due to repair turnaround. I've been using this adapter for 9 weeks, and I no longer have any problems with broken adapter pins.

This product was recommended to me by an off-duty ASUS employee and forum moderator on a Republic of Gamers forum. She suggested it specifically for the broken adapter pin issue.

If anyone is still deciding whether or not to buy this product, then I urge you to do some independent research. Look up adapter pin breakage issues with ASUS G53 laptops, and you'll find it's widespread.

Works well for its intended purpose, but it has a short life-span.

Product works as designed - an L-shaped connector that helps relieve shearing stress on male connector pins for laptops whose powerjacks have a protruding pin. I have an ASUS G53S computer, and the pin broke off less than 6 months of usage, primarily due to the design of the powerjack. The internal pin is only around 2 mm wide at its widest point, and this is where it snapped off the powerjack, as the straight-protruding design of the adapter tip on the power supply places unnecessary stress on it.

However, this L-shaped connector has a number of flaws itself. It overheats very easily, as the plastic that houses it starts to soften/melt within just a few hours of usage. Repeated heated/cooling cycles seems to stop it from working entirely, and it wasn't until I stripped away the plastic casing did I figure out why - the electrical connection from the adapter tip to the rest of the power supply is dependendent on a single bit of soldered wire, and this soldered connection will actually disconnect from the shell of the adapter tip if it gets too hot. I would recommend using more solder, or some kind of non-melting binding to prevent this from happening, for a more stable connection.

Works as intended. Tight plug when plugged into, not lose, doesn't try to disconnect with ease. ASUS ROG laptops now come with angle plugs, but mine originally did not and I was tired of having that 3 inch plug connection sticking out into my mousing area or running into it with my hand all the time. This fixed that problem and for the cost...it's well worth it rather than paying over a 100 bucks for an angle plugged new adapter from ASUS.

This will save your ASUS G53 notebook

I bought this converter after experiencing an issue with my ASUS notebook that left the power pin for the motherboard stuck in my AC adapter. According to computer forums, this is a common problem with this model. Apparently there is an overheating issue or something which causes the pin to heat up too much, and over time the repeated heating and cooling weakens the pin. To add to the problem, the adapter that comes with the computer is straight, rather than angled, and puts a lot of pressure on the pin every time it is jostled. The result? A broken power pin after less than one year of use.

ASUS replaced my motherboard, but after reading on forums about people having repeated problems with this, I thought I would follow some advice and buy one of these angled converters to take the strain off the pin. It has worked magnificently. A couple months ago (after less than 2 years of use) I started having the overheating issues again, except this time, instead of my first warning being that the power pin had broken off and my laptop wouldn't power on because the AC adapter was useless and the battery had run out while I was away from my computer, my first warning was how hot the metal connector of the converter was getting. The plastic on the converter even had partially melted at one point and stuck itself to the pin. Fortunately, the converter is somewhat loose anyway, and with some careful maneuvering I was able to remove the converter/adapter without breaking the pin (because of the design of this converter I was able to gently rotate it around rather than jiggling it or pulling). So, unlike the first time I dealt with this issue, the pin did not break off, and I had enough warning to make sure everything was completely backed up on my computer (yes, I know I should always keep it backed up), and did not suddenly lose the use of my computer. I still had to send it in to be fixed, but that is on ASUS and their poor design. Then ASUS sent it back to me with a broken keyboard, but that is another story.

I am completely convinced that this converter saved me from another unpleasant "my computer won't turn on" surprise by putting less strain on the motherboard pin. Until ASUS figures out what is going on with these laptops and fixes the problem (hah!), I will continue to use this converter.
