This series works for the same reason his Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency does: a compelling, admirable heroine whose everyday life is a construction in how we would wish to live our own.
Oh, and I cannot leave out how well he captures the custom, culture, and landscape of their respective countries: Scotland and Botswana.
Isabel develops a romantic interest (I won't spoil it for you!), has some visitors from America, and generally has some interesting and fun times. The plot, as in the previous books, has little enough to it that I don't want to say much more, but the philosophical musings and thoughts on everyday life are charming and a pleasure to read, and I was thrilled to see her character blossom so nicely!
Can't wait for the next one.
Alexander McCall Smith's style is clever, innovative while still "down to earth" even "folksy" in the way of some earlier American writers. His books are wonderful little gems that give a peek into the lives of characters living in other parts of the world and make one realize that we are all so alike and live our lives in much the same manner with the same interests in what goes on around us every day and for some of us with the same intuitive abilities as his wonderful characters.
It makes me feel it would be a great pleasure to know him, to sit and chat, to know people like his characters!
thank you for the opportunity to review the Isabel Dalhousie Mysteries. I have read all of his No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency novels as well....bravo to a wonderful author!!!
While awaiting her verdict, we once again meet up with Isabel's closest cohorts. Grace, the daily housekeeper inherited from her father, is given to shrewd and laconic utterances and an abiding interest in the paranormal. Cat, Isabel's niece and next of kin, is the alluring-yet-edgy owner of a gourmet shop and deli who is prone to involve herself with unsuitable men, none of whom last very long. And Brother Fox is, in fact, a fox who has taken up residence in Isabel's yard. They take a keen interest in each other while keeping a safe distance apart. And then there's Jamie, Cat's rejected suitor who is 14 years younger than Isabel. He's a concert bassoonist without much money (in contrast to her millions), and Isabel has fallen in love with him. You'll have to read the book to find out the latest twist in their relationship . . .
