As a parent of a male to female transgender child I was looking for insight and optimism from someone who had personal experience of this particular journey. Unfortunately I found this book was the opposite of upbeat: it reminded me of " Persuit of Happiness" in that the only joy is at the very end, and the rest of the story is pretty much a study in misery and maladjustment. I found it a difficult read, even though there was little writing inside. There are plenty of blank pages and (in my opinion) dreadful poetry to bulk out the 200 odd pages, which at least made it a quick book to get through. The end is a little too much information on self care after sex reassignment surgery.
I have since read "She's Not There. A Life in Two Genders" by Jennifer Finney Boylan, which I did enjoy. This book seemed much more helpful in coming to terms with my son's soon to be transition. I did find the afterword by Richard Russo to be the most moving part, though...

by
Annah Moore
(Author)
…I didn’t have the fortitude or the energy to try to keep that going anymore. I just wanted to find myself, and be myself. Far more than a transsexual memoir, Right Side Out: In-tune Within, To Be In Harmony With The World is a plunge into the core of what makes a person who they are—a journey into the brightest and darkest recesses of humanity and back through author Annah Moore’s unique and deeply passionate struggle for survival in a quest to find her true self. Through candid vignettes and vivid recollections, Moore shares with us some of the all-time lows and highs on her journey through life. Not only does Moore give you entertaining and thought-provoking glimpses into her experiences, she takes you one step further and explains exactly how each of these incredible events helped transform not only her outer self, but her entire being. This overall change embodies the most powerful part of her story, for it is not just a tale about outer transformation—it is a complete alteration of mind, body, and spirit. Don’t waste a chance to discover peace and harmony within yourself. Let Moore’s story inspire you to find the happiness you deserve by being your true self.

Annah is so honest and compelling in this book that I cannot put into words what I felt as I read Right Side Out. She has a way of weaving her life's story into a tale of transgenderism that anyone can relate to. Looking back over all the gender related books I have read so far, this book is my favorite for reasons that are difficult to put into words. Maybe it is that I can feel a connection with her that is so loving and supporting from a person who truly cares. Thank you Annah for sharing with us all!

The author pulls no punches as she describes the trials and tribulations that she endures as she moves on her journey of self discovery and transition. I've read a number of books on the subject of gender disphoria and Annah does a good job to truly describe how being a member of this hidden (or not so hidden) community impacts not just the individual but, those around her, and her relationships at work, home, with family and friends. I especially enjoyed that this book did not glamorize her life but showed it with all of it's blemishes and raw feelings exposed for an honest look at what being transgendered is.
I'd recommend it for any counseling student or anyone looking to understand the struggles a person with gender disphoria endures. It's also a great read for anyone who themself is struggeling with gender disphoria so that you may know that you are not alone in this and that others have walked in your shoes and made it.

This is a truly, truly wonderful book by someone who is clearly a very passionate, wise and caring individual. The book is full of amazing insights into the transgender condition that will be invaluable, not only to those who already self-identify as transsexual, but also to 'significant others' and individuals currently unsure of their status and future direction. If you only have time to read one transgender autobiography, please make it this one. You won't regret it. Better still, buy this book for its wisdom and healing message, and Kate Bornstein's 'Gender Outlaw' for its liberating political vision.

Annah has written a painfully honest book about her long struggle with gender dysphoria and the process of becoming who she knew she truly was. I've read many trans biographies, and I think this is one of the best for getting accross what it feels like to have to make the decision to transition, knowing that it's going to rip your life apart, but also knowing that you have to do it to be able to continue living. If you want a glimpse of what it feels like to live with this terrible choice constantly in your mind, and what it costs emotionally to come to grips with it, I highly recommend Annah's book. (It's not all gloomy, and it does have a happy ending.)

Right side out. The title says it all.
This book is one of the best transsexual autobiographies to be published in years.
Her wit, realism and plainspoken humanity will resonate with trans and non-trans people.
If you want to understand transsexual people this is your book.
If you think you are transsexual this is required reading.
If you are transsexual this book will make you remember your story, it's like she knows you and what you've been through. Because she has been what you've been through. Gut wrenchingly honest.
A page-turner and must read, you're really pulling for her throughout the whole book.
What a triumph! Way to go Annah!
Five freaking stars and a cherry on top!

Ms Moore had set a new standard for revealing the many struggles, twists, and turns involved in coming to grips with one's gender confusion. She successfully captures the pain, heartache, and ultimately the triumph involved not only for herself but also those who have been a part of her journey.
This book is simply a great read!
