5-star review for Rijksmuseum Amsterdam by Emily-Jane Hills Orford for Readers' Favorite (26 February 2018)
The Rijksmuseum (National Museum of the Netherlands) is aclassic architectural wonder that houses over a million art works. Themuseum (gallery), located in the cultural center of Amsterdam, boasts amagnificent collection of works from around the world and throughout the centuries, including the works of the seventeenth-century DutchMasters; Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals and many others. A cathedral-likebuilding, the ambiance of the space exudes historical and artisticreverence.
The focal point of the gallery space is the Front Hall, the Gallery ofHonor, and the Rembrandt Hall where the Netherlands, from theseventeenth-century, the Dutch Golden Age, reflects a proud era of Dutch history, not just in its art, but also in the fine crafts such assilverware, furniture, earthenware and fine tapestries. The othergalleries in the Rijksmuseum trace historical eras through the centuries from medieval times to current contemporary works. There is also agallery devoted to Asian works. The special collections gallery is asurprise. It features many unique and unusual artifacts, like modelships, porcelain tea sets, engraved glass and silver, working magiclanterns and a silent disco. "You will feel like a child in a toystore."
Art historian Marko Kassenaar has produced a marvellous guide to one ofthe world's great art treasures. Rijksmuseum Amsterdam: Highlights ofthe Collection (Amsterdam Museum Guides Book 1) is both useful andinformative, complete with illustrations and enticing comments aboutspecific aspects of both the museum and the collection. The book isdivided into sections, each section featuring one particular collectionwithin the museum. A wonderful guide.

Over the last 10 years I have visited the Rijksmuseum on three separate occasions and I wish I had this book with me during those visits.
The last times I visited the Rijksmuseum I used the audio program and booklet provided by the museum. Although I learned a lot from the standard museum materials I found them too academic and too dry. What I really liked about “The New Rijksmuseum” by Marko Kassenaar is that the author provides the essential highlights of the important pieces in a way that is easy to understand. Also I really enjoyed the little tidbits of cultural information and interesting facts that are often missing in most guides but are included in so many of the descriptions in this book.
The last time I was at the Rijksmuseum a few years ago they were renovating some of the major sections. Now I have this essential guide so I can learn about all the important highlights right from my Kindle app!
The summaries for major art pieces in this e-book are interesting. Of course, only the principal pieces are in this book and many more can be seen with an actual visit. The book reminds me of the world class quality of Amsterdam museums.
Amsterdam - it's a great city. The Rijksmuseum and nearby Leidesplein have good fun, bars and restaurants for all tastes. There's also a traditional Dutch cuisine restaurant next to Leidesplein which is very much worth a visit.
This is a good e-book but the travel DVDs about Amsterdam and The Netherlands are even better.
If you ever visit Amsterdam, be sure to take a tour of this amazing museum.
