This belt sander works well. Assembly is bit bothersome, but once together the machine functions flawlessly. Belt tracking is exact and the disc runs perfectly true. The rubber feet dampen all vibration. A nice touch: adapters are supplied for your vacuum to attach to the machine. It helps, but does not eliminate dust. The switch is shielded so that dust cannot get to a place where it might be ignited by switching sparks. This is a well engineered and well built tool that should last a lifetime.

This product appears to be a hit and miss in quality control. Unit delivered was poorly finished and belt support platen was 1/4" off center of belt. No amount of fiddling with tracking could shift belt over platen. Only fix would be to drill cast aluminum frame and re-tap threads bit I did not want to take chance of cracking frame so I returned the item as defective to Amazon only to find out that refund was $104 due to $13 shipping credit that was not refundable. Buyer beware, best to have an actual sample to look at in person to make sure fit and finish is acceptable. I would not recommend this sander to a friend.

What a great buy for just a very few bucks. I got a great belt sander that was completely assembled with the exception of the two platforms. It was packaged well and everything was properly aligned. It has a 1/3 hp motor that just loafs along.

I was able to sharpen an old knife within 10 minutes of opening the box. I had also ordered 1000 & 1200 grit belts and a leather strop at the same time and this machine gave me a perfect light-duty sander and a knife sharpener in one. No problems encountered and it did everything it was supposed to do, right out of the box.

I have had my rikon for over a year now and I absolutely love it. I deal mostly with thick tool steels for knife and tool making and it has never let me down. It absolutely eats up 1/4 inch and thicker d-2 steel and o-1. Changing the belts is a very simple process on this machine and the value is second to none. The five year guarantee gives me piece of mind that if I do manage to break it the company will fix it. Now this machine is not a burr king so if that is what you are looking for then I suggest you pony up the dough and buy a burr king. But if you want a good sander that has solid performance then this is your machine.

I really like most Rikon products. I have their 14 inch bandsaw and it is great. Their larger tools are well made and good quality. Having said that, This small hobby sander had a fit and finish so poor it could not even be assembled properly. I bought it to sand small scroll saw projects. When I took it out of the box I noticed that the platen (the sanding belt backing plate) was a full 1/2 inch out of alignment with the belt. I looked, and there was no way to adjust this alignment. That meant that half the sanding belt was off the platen. It was so far out of alignment that the table could not be fitted. I went to the local woodcraft store and the one they had on display also had a mis-aligned platen, although it was not nearly as bad as the one I got. I returned the Rikon sander and bought a Grizzly 1 by 30 sander. Rikon needs to exert better quality control over their Chinese made small products. They do it for the big tools, so they should be able to do it for the small stuff too.

so far so good . This product replaces another Chinese made one that lasted about 5 years. this one appears to be a better overall build and the switch is covered to keep dust out. This is what killed the previous one. The power is adequate for small to medium jobs.
I hesitate to write reviews when I haven't used a product for long. Most people care about reliability (like me) So if I have issues I will update this review down the road.

I buy and use a lot of bench top tools, most expensive and precision made. The Rikon was purchased because I needed a small 1" belt sander to do some quick rough out work on fabricated parts and I wanted to be able to move it to different locations within the shop, putting it on a shelf while not in use.

The Rikon is nicely finished for a unit of this price. Yes, the belt platen was off 1/4" to the left, but took ten minutes to correct. The belt is not centered to the platen, it is centered to the rollars, which should align it with the platen. The opening in the belt sanding table is a little rough, but both tables align correctly and provide good support. There is plenty of power for the size of material appropriate for this size sander. The belt tracked correctly as received, however, I did try adjustment and it drifted right and left just fine and stayed where set.

I do have another more robust 1" belt bench sander that has much heavier cast iron tables with lots of adjustment options. It has all steel enclosures, the same horse power rating and a power take off for a flex shaft. A JET J-4002 1-Inch by 42-Inch Bench Belt and Disc Sander which sells for over $400.

This is very similar to my old Delta sander --- looks as if they were manufactured by the same company. I got this one to replace the Delta when it quit working and the local repair shop wanted more to repair it than this new sander cost. This sander with a course belt is really great for shaping odd shaped wood projects --- even in hard wood, it cuts away the unwanted portions rapidly. Also, with a very fine belt (400 grit) or a leather belt (both of which are hard to find) it does a great job of polishing.
