I grew up having a few favorite poems read to me from this book. There are some poems that certainly require you to conform to the country lingo in which they're written. Given the fact that this book was originally published in the late 1800's, it provides a wonderful look into history, poetry as entertainment, and a way of speaking that is not heard much anymore. My very favorite poem is "The Bear Story". It is "written" by a boy named Alex and has so many charming twists, turns and changes of mind mid-stream that it's both engaging and funny. Of course this book contains "Little Orphant Annie", and my other favorite, "The Raggedy Man." If you're a lover of old poetry or fun poetry, this is certainly a book that deserves a spot on your shelf. Enjoy!

"Oh the raggedy man who works for pa..".The little red book takes me back to James Whitcomb Riley and my childhood (that is a trip since I'm 86.) I was so pleased to find it red with a Hoosier drawing in gold...just like the one in my family library. It is on the coffee table and guarentees a smile! -- Jane Erickson

My children and I have really enjoyed this collection of James Whitcomb Riley's poetry. This volume contains our favorite Riley poems, and we share them by reading aloud.

IU Press did a wonderful job reprinting this book. The artwork and the new typeface are beautiful! I am very glad to have this on our shelf.

Even with such a difference in a century this has made with technology, some poems can still resonate strongly. "Riley Child-Rhymes with Hoosier Pictures" is a collection of poems aimed at and on the discussion of children from James Whitcomb Riley, a famed poet of the end of the nineteenth century. Thoughtful and charming after all these years, and accompanied by plenty of nostalgic hand drawn pictures of the era, "Riley Child-Rhymes with Hoosier Pictures" is a choice collection, highly recommended.

This is a set of children's poems from the late 19th century, handsomely bound and published. If that is what you are looking for, I recommend it highly. The poet is a 'favorite son' of Indiana, so if that is your bucket of fish, again, I recommend it.

I grew up in Indiana, and the riley poems were a part of my childhood. My most favorite poem is "The Bear Story" in which a little boy makes up a story and tells it in Hoosier dialect. The details change as he tells the story. I have used it in children's literature classes to work on listening skills. There is "Little Orphant Annie" and "The Raggedy Man." Some of the poems deal with death and should not be used with children, but at time these were written many children did die or suffer handicaps. Some of the poems are a sentimental remembrance of childhood. It was a simpler time. I enjoy the dialect. The pictures are carefully preserved from the 1890 version. The book takes you back in time.

I have loved James Whitcomb Riley's poetry since I was small, so as I read the poems I can relate many of them to scenes of my childhood. I enjoy Riley's work, and the character and dialect he uses to paint his subjects really make them come alive. Two of my special favorites are "Little Orphant Annie & "At Aunty's House". This is an excellent volume that showcases some of the author's most well known works.

The simplicity of this book is what is endearing. It begins with the cover and proceeds to the lovely silouette sketches within, not to mention the cherished works of James Whitcomb Riley. This is one for my library of great works that many will enjoy through the years. The book arrived in post haste time and the condition was excellent.
