As the story opens, Anne and Gilbert Blythe's children, and the children of their neighbors the Merediths, have reached young adulthood. Even Rilla is old enough to attend a dance at the lighthouse, where she hopes to find romance with the handsome Ken Ford. The news of the outbreak of the war changes everything, and Rilla makes an adult promise to Ken as he ships out for the Army. As her brothers and the Meredith boys join the service and leave for France, the previously unambitious Rilla will find the motivation, and the grit, to take up her share of the struggle. She will take responsibility for an abandoned war-baby, and will lead the local chapter of the Junior Red Cross. And she will find the strength to comfort her own mother when bad news comes back from Europe...
Montgomery wrote "Rilla of Ingleside" from her wartime journals, capturing the ebb and flow of hope and despair over the course of the war. Montgomery uses the war to frame Rilla's arduous road to maturity, but she also illuminates other aspects of the homefront in ways both tragic and humorous. The story has a biting realism that will stay with readers afterward. Highly recommended to fans of the "Anne of Green Gables" novels.
