Product Description

Players play on a 3D board, representing the Niagara River and the falls. Canoes float down the river as the river flows, but players can row their canoes up-river or down-river to collect gems, to return them to shore, and to avoid the waterfall. This game is great fun for the family, but is strategic and gives players the chance to plan and steal from one another.Ages 8 and Up - 3 to 5 Players

From the Manufacturer

In the wild rapids of the Niagara River, fearless canoers battle the water and each other to collect gems along the riverbank. Of course, the most valuable gems are found furthest down-river, close to the waterfall. Yes, there is a waterfall, and careless canoers can fall over the waterfall. Also, players must return collected gems to land in order to be counted. At the end, the player who collects the most value in gems is the winner. Players play on a 3D board, representing the Niagara River and the falls. Canoes float down the river as the river flows, but players can row their canoes up-river or down-river to collect gems, to return them to shore, and to avoid the waterfall. This game is great fun for the family and gives players the chance to plan and steal from one another. This family board game is for 3 to 5 players and takes about 60 minutes to play.

The thing that everyone will notice and talk about first with Niagara, is usually the board design. The board is cleverly designed to sit atop the opened box creating a waterfall that is a major part of the game.

Each round takes about 20-30 minutes, and because turns are short, there's not a lot of downtime. Each turn you're moving, trying to get downriver to pick up gems, and then get back upriver to try to avoid being flushed over the waterfall losing everything.

There's not a ton of depth in this game, but that's not really a bad thing. You won't play this in marathon sessions, and that's the point. This game plays quickly, is fun, and has pretty fun and unique idea in the board that moves with your pieces resting on it.

This game is pretty easy to teach and to learn, but takes about a full round to fully grasp. After that it's easy to pull out and get through a few times and feel satisfied. Very nice if you don't have a lot of time, or want to play a few games in one sitting.

I like this game a lot, but I had to drop one star because the rules can be a bit confusing to read through. They are generally straightforward, but there are a few poorly defined areas. Once you get through the first round, everything comes together though.

This is a great "bridge" game. Not too hard, not too easy. Good game to bridge the gap between Monopoly & Clue board gamers and the geeks like my friends that play Axis and Allies! I have played with the expansions to this game and was not impressed. I think the game plays best stand along.

Niagara is a great family game.
The theme is great and comes through as you battle to keep your boats from descending down the falls in a mess.
It takes about an hour but there is very little down time as you second guess what your opponents will do and try to plan out your next raid on the jewels bordering the falls.

This is a great game. I have been very pleased with other Rio Grande Games and bought this one having never played it before. It is easy to learn, plays in a reasonable amount of time, and is loads of fun. Highly recommend for family game night!!

Niagara is a typical example of games that win the "spiele das jahres" title (2005). It is a relatively easy game with not too many rules and lots of room for strategy. Luck plays some role but anticipating your opponents moves helps remove the luck factor. It doesn't take too long to play, about 30-45 minutes and only takes a couple of plays to learn how to strategise effectively. Highly recommended.

What a fun concept and great looking board. As the river runs towards the waterfalls, your canoes move closer to danger. Grab a gem and get it back to safety before you fall off.

Each turn you choose to either move one (or both) of your canoes, or you can influence the weather. After everyone moves their canoes and maybe picks up or delivers a gem, the weather influences how fast the river flows.

It's great how the river moves and there is randomness on how much it will move each turn. However, we never really got to feel like there was enough room for strategy to make it fun. We just went back and forth and the randomness was too much. The game was quick and I suppose with more plays, we could figure out better strategy, but none of us wanted to play any more to see if it got more fun.

On the plus side, it is an easier game to learn than some other euro games, but Ticket to Ride isn't that complicated and we could play it all night!

One other note - there are a couple major omissions from the directions. We were confused, and I suppose if we cared, we could have found more detailed instructions online...it definitely bugs me when a game is released with incomplete/confusing rules.

If it was the only game on our shelf, it would get pulled out once in a while, but with all the amazing games out there, why spend time on this one? (If you are new to games like this, usually Rio Grande makes good games. Try Dominion or Puerto Rico - they are both much better than this.)

So glad we borrowed this and tried it before buying it.
