Editorial Reviews

Review

Sherry Anderson opened one door when she co-authored The Feminine Face of God. Now she opens another. With honesty, wealth of experience, and penetrating questions, she leads us again. The issue, she says, is not to know the map [of elderhood], but to be the map. These writings are a rich and important resource for all who wonder how to reach the true harvest of their lives. You will not be disappointed.

(Paula D'Arcy)

This is a slow read because she is 'reframing' how
our culture obliges us to feel burdened by aging.

Ahhh, but this is not a fluffy, cutie pie, platitude
laden march into Senior Citizen-dom. She puts you
to work. Get a journal for this one. Better yet...

Talk it up. Drop it into conversations. Why...
With over 12,000 a day turning 65... before we
can change how the culture regards us... we
have to examine --- with twinkle in the eye! ---
how we experience ourselves.

Sherry Ruth Anderson has distilled years of wisdom into a slim volume with a gorgeous cover picture of harvest fruits and vegetables. The analogy to nature of "Aging With Grace" is developed through true women's stories as well as the author's life experiences that add first person authenticity and generosity of spirit. The writing is superb, drawing the reader into what it means to become an older woman. An early chapter challenges the common assumption that "Old Age is boring". Chapter 8 "Disturbing the Furies" is a blockbuster! Anderson brings us to the harvest of Maturity, when being an elder conveys a presence that has grown through the years. This is a very interesting and positive book, combining deep knowledge with expressive prose. The author, who writes and teaches about spiritual development, poses possible answers to the most searching question elder women face in our society every day.

Unlike some of the books on aging I have looked at which seem to exhort us to do this or that, this book is more an invitation -- to be with what is actually happening in our bodies, minds, and spirits; to reflect on meaning and leadings; to open up to the deeper and wider range of possibilities that beckon to us in the ripeness of our later years.

Simply a wonderful book exploring the questions of ageing that relate to not only ourselves but as elders in a world that needs elders to take their place as never before. From a personal point of view it opens us to the questions that lie within our own hearts about the process of 'diminishing' as some fearfully call it. It addresses fears not so much in a practical 'how to' way but rather in a more intellectual and spiritual way.The author shows through her own personal stories and those of others that opening up to the questions of ageing and death make us vulnerable but also lead to a potential contentment just to 'be'. It dispels myths such as old age is 'boring' and shows how vital older people can be and how important their contribution is now and in the near future, when over 25% of the population will be 'elder's.
I enjoyed the chapter on 'ancestors' very much. Ms Anderson's writing is clear and I could hear her voice become stronger with the 'age' of the book. A beautiful book that should helpful to anyone who is ready to explore what older age means and what can be the spiritual and emotional benefits of asking the right questions of ourselves and society.

I give this book 5 stars because it is an approach to aging that I find personally helpful. The writing is clear and the authoress really lets you into her life and her aging process in a way that is both poignant and light. It's a delightful read that offers a fresh perspective on aging and debunks the cultural spin on growing older.

Beautifully written by a master of inquiry – Ripening Time cracks open our imagination and curiosity about the potential of what and who we can be if we “ripen our full human development”. Baby Boomers, about to test the limits of longevity, have always challenged the status quo – the way we have lived, loved and explored the meaning of our lives. Sherry Ruth Anderson opens a new gateway of discovery by challenging our limiting cultural beliefs on aging and asking provocative questions about what can we create that is real and life-enriching as we enter this new territory. Highly recommended!

Sherry Anderson has done a beautiful job of thinking about what it means to age consciously. This is a wonderful contribution to those are becoming elders, to those who will become elders in the future, and to all who love and care for them.
